The Green Bay Packers are seeing some movement on the offensive side of the ball - and this time, it’s not about who’s staying, but who’s going. While the defensive staff has been almost entirely scooped up by the Miami Dolphins, head coach Matt LaFleur had kept the offensive coaching core intact. That changed Thursday night when quarterbacks coach Sean Mannion was hired by the Philadelphia Eagles to be their next offensive coordinator.
For the Eagles, this hire ends a search that had become one of the more talked-about coaching vacancies of the offseason. There’s been no shortage of speculation about why the OC job in Philly remained open - whether it was concerns about the locker room, questions surrounding head coach Nick Sirianni’s job security, or internal friction over staffing decisions like the future of offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland. Whatever the reasons, the Eagles have their guy now - and it’s a fast-rising one in Mannion.
Mannion’s connection to Philadelphia picked up steam this week when he traveled for an in-person interview. That followed an earlier virtual meeting with the team earlier in the offseason.
He’s fresh off calling plays in the East-West Shrine Bowl, where he served as offensive coordinator for the West team and helped lead them to a 21-17 win. It’s a small sample, sure, but it gave teams a glimpse into his play-calling chops and leadership style with a group of unfamiliar players - a valuable trait in today’s NFL.
What makes Mannion’s rise even more notable is how quickly it’s happened. After a nine-year career as an NFL quarterback, he entered the coaching ranks in 2024 with the Packers as an offensive assistant.
Just a year later, LaFleur promoted him to quarterbacks coach - a move that made sense, given their shared history. LaFleur had been Mannion’s offensive coordinator during his playing days, and clearly saw something in his football mind that translated to coaching.
Now, less than two years into his coaching career, Mannion is running the offense for a playoff team. That kind of trajectory is rare.
It speaks not only to his understanding of the game but also to the trust he’s earned from coaches and front offices alike. For Philadelphia, this is a swing on upside - a young coach with fresh ideas and a quarterback’s perspective, stepping into a high-pressure role in one of the league’s most passionate markets.
Meanwhile, the Packers will need to fill the void left by Mannion’s departure. The likely candidate?
Luke Getsy. He’s currently listed as a senior assistant in Green Bay, but he’s no stranger to the quarterbacks room.
Getsy was the Packers’ QBs coach from 2019 to 2021 before taking on play-calling duties elsewhere. He returned to Green Bay two years ago and could be the next man up to work with Jordan Love and the young offensive core.
And over in Miami, the Dolphins continue to build out Jeff Hafley’s staff, with reports now indicating that Nathaniel Hackett will join as quarterbacks coach. It’s been a coaching carousel this offseason, and the Packers - long known for their coaching pipeline - are right in the middle of it.
So while Green Bay’s offensive foundation remains largely intact, Sean Mannion’s departure marks a significant shift. For the Eagles, it’s a bold hire. For the Packers, it’s another opportunity to lean on their deep coaching bench.
