The Green Bay Packers are adding another tight end to a room that’s been hit hard by injuries, with McCallan Castles set to re-sign with the team, according to Sports Illustrated’s Bill Huber.
Green Bay’s depth at the position has been thinned out fast. Tucker Kraft is still working his way back in practice after a season-ending ACL tear in 2025, while Luke Musgrave was dealing with a neck issue and R.J.
Maryland with a hamstring injury heading into Monday’s practice. The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman also noted that Luke Lachey, who was signed in mid-June after initially failing his physical because of a hamstring issue, was in a boot and on a scooter after practice.
That left the Packers with just four healthy tight ends on hand: Josh Whyle, Drake Dabney, Messiah Swinson and Thomas Yassmin. Yassmin, an Aussie, is an international exemption player, so he doesn’t count against Green Bay’s 90-man roster.
Castles is a familiar name for the Packers. He was first signed last November, when a wave of injuries at the position led to Whyle being elevated from the practice squad.
On January 1st, Castles landed on the team’s practice squad injury list, which works like injured reserve for the practice squad. After the season, he returned on a reserve/futures deal, but Green Bay waived him before the 2026 draft.
He got another look from the Packers last week, working out alongside six other tight ends, including Yassmin, who was eventually signed.
Castles has not appeared in an NFL regular-season game and has not played in the preseason for Green Bay either, but he may finally get that chance in 2026. His college path took him from Cal, where he had one catch for 15 yards across two seasons, to UC-Davis, where he put up 69 receptions for 928 yards and nine touchdowns over three years. He then moved back up to the FBS level for his final season at Tennessee, finishing with 22 catches for 283 yards and five touchdowns.
He entered the league undrafted in 2024 and spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams before landing with Green Bay. Back then, The Athletic’s Dane Brugler ranked him as his #19 tight end, with 14 tight ends receiving draftable grades, and gave him a priority free agent grade.
Brugler’s summary of Castles noted his background in multiple sports, his path from Berthoud High in Colorado to South Lake Tahoe, and his need to sharpen both his special-teams value and blocking consistency to stick. The report also said his basketball background stands out.
Because the Packers’ roster is full, they’ll need to make a corresponding move before Castles can be added ahead of Tuesday’s practice. Keep an eye on Green Bay making a release early Tuesday.

Packers Pass Rush May Be Stuck Waiting On Josh Sweat
Josh Sweat has become one of the more intriguing names on the trade market for a Packers team still looking for help up front while Micah Parsons works his way back from injury. Sweat is on the physically unable to perform list with knee maintenance, and he has reportedly asked the Cardinals for a trade, which has only added to the speculation around his future and Green Bays possible fit.
For now, though, the picture remains unsettled. The Packers have shown interest in adding Sweat to bolster the pass rush, but the talks have not moved quickly, and Arizona has little reason to force the issue with the deadline still ahead.
