Packers Tackle Rasheed Walker Arrested at LaGuardia Over Firearm Licensing Issue
Green Bay Packers left tackle Rasheed Walker was arrested Friday morning at LaGuardia Airport after attempting to check a legally owned firearm without the proper credentials required under New York law.
According to Port Authority police, the incident occurred at Terminal C, where Walker approached airport staff to declare an unloaded firearm stored in a lockbox. He was reportedly cooperative throughout the process, but the situation escalated when authorities determined that his Wisconsin-issued gun license was not valid in New York State.
Walker’s attorney, Arthur L. Aidala, described the incident as a misunderstanding.
“Walker mistakenly believed he was allowed to travel with his firearm that is legally licensed in Wisconsin,” Aidala said. He emphasized that Walker disclosed the firearm voluntarily and was under the impression he was following proper procedure.
But New York’s firearm laws are among the strictest in the country. Under Article 400 of the New York Penal Law, individuals must possess a New York State-issued license to legally carry or possess a handgun within the state. Because Walker’s license was issued in Wisconsin and not recognized in New York, Port Authority officers proceeded with an arrest on the grounds of criminal possession of a weapon.
Aidala noted that Walker typically travels with the team and doesn't usually carry a firearm when flying. “We are confident that the charges will be dismissed,” he added, suggesting that Walker’s actions were not malicious but rather the result of a legal technicality.
Walker is scheduled to appear in court on March 16.
On the field, Walker has held down the starting left tackle job in Green Bay for the past three seasons, protecting the blind side and anchoring the offensive line. His play has been a key part of the Packers' offensive rhythm, especially in a year that saw the team push into the postseason. Green Bay’s season came to a close with a 31-27 loss to the Chicago Bears in the NFC wild-card round on January 10.
Now, with his contract expiring and free agency on the horizon, Walker enters the offseason facing uncertainty both on and off the field. While his legal team is optimistic about a resolution, this situation adds an unexpected wrinkle to what was already shaping up to be a pivotal offseason for the 24-year-old lineman.
