The Green Bay Packers open the 2026 NFL season in a tough spot, and Week One against the Minnesota Vikings already feels like a test of how much they can absorb before the year really gets going.
They’ll be without two of their most important pieces. All-Pro pass rusher Micah Parsons is on the PUP list while he recovers from a torn ACL and will miss at least the first four weeks. Pro Bowl running back Josh Jacobs is also unavailable, sitting on the commissioner’s exempt list while the NFL investigates the domestic violence incident for which he pled no contest in criminal court.
That leaves Green Bay leaning on players who need to do more than simply hold serve. Three names stand out: Keisean Nixon, Jordan Love and Lukas Van Ness.
Nixon is still going to be central to what the Packers do on defense, even after Green Bay invested in the cornerback room this offseason. Benjamin St.
Juste arrived in free agency, and Brandon Cisse was the team’s first draft pick, but Nixon still projects as a major piece. That matters this week because the Vikings are bringing Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison to town, and Green Bay needs someone who can play like a true CB1.
Nixon didn’t give the Packers nearly enough last season, allowing a passer rating of 105.1 and a career-high six touchdowns when targeted. That has to change, starting now.
Love, meanwhile, has a chance to take even more control of the offense with Jacobs out of the picture. It’s the kind of setup plenty of Packers fans have been waiting for.
Last season was the best of his career, as he completed 66.3% of his passes, posted a 101.2 passer rating and threw a career-low six interceptions. He also missed a game with a concussion and sat out the final game of 2025 out of precaution.
Now the ball is set to be in his hands even more, and Week One is the chance to set the tone for the whole season.
Then there’s Van Ness, who has to be part of the answer up front. When Parsons went down last season, the rest of Green Bay’s pass rush failed to pick up the slack, and the defense never found consistent pressure again.
That collapse played a big role in why the Packers didn’t win a game after their All-Pro got hurt. Van Ness, entering his fourth NFL season, needs to finally become the disruptive force Green Bay expected when it took him in the first round of the 2023 draft.
He has 8.5 sacks through his first three seasons, and the Packers need more than that - a lot more - if they’re going to survive these first few weeks without Parsons.
Against Minnesota, those are the three players who have to carry a bigger load.
