Packers Suddenly Need Pierre Strong Jr. More Than Anyone Expected

With the Packers' rushing attack struggling, Pierre Strong Jr. may be poised to revitalize their ground game as he steps up from the practice squad.

The Green Bay Packers are heading into Week 5 with a run game that has gone nowhere fast, and that’s why Pierre Strong Jr. is suddenly part of the conversation.

Green Bay has spent the first four weeks searching for a back who can give the offense some life on the ground, and it still hasn’t found one. Now, ahead of Sunday’s matchup with the Bears at Lambeau Field, the Packers are turning to Strong after activating him from the practice squad.

That move comes with some context. Chris Brooks is injured, and the team’s top two running backs have not been able to get much of anything going. Through four games, the Packers sit dead last in the NFL in rushing yards with 232.

That number gets even uglier when you zoom out. Green Bay is averaging just 58 rushing yards per game and 3.2 yards per carry, the second-lowest mark in the league. Meanwhile, Bears backs Kyle Monangai and D'Andre Swift each have more than 300 rushing yards on their own, more than the Packers have as a team.

Monangai won’t play in Week 5, but the contrast still tells the story. The Packers’ ground attack has offered almost no support, and that has forced the team to look for a fresh option.

Strong is the latest attempt.

MarShawn Lloyd and Kaleb Johnson have not done much to solve the problem, and that’s been a major issue for Green Bay. The offensive line has been part of the inconsistency, but the rushing attack has been just as big a reason the offense has sputtered.

That matters because Matt LaFleur’s offense has long been built around the run. Since he arrived in Green Bay, LaFleur has leaned on rushing formations to feed the play-action game and keep defenses off balance. This season, though, the Packers haven’t been able to establish that kind of rhythm.

Without a dependable run game, Green Bay has leaned more heavily on Jordan Love and the passing attack. At times that can work, but with the offensive line struggling and defenses showing little fear of the run, Love has been asked to fit throws into tighter and tighter windows. That has not always gone well.

Strong’s activation at least gives the Packers a new name to work with, but whether it turns into a real solution is another matter. It remains to be seen if he can spark a rushing attack that has done next to nothing, and it’s not even clear how much the team plans to lean on him.

For now, Green Bay is still trying to piece together a run game one move at a time, and Strong is the latest piece they’re hoping can help.

Packers Mourn The Loss Of A Champion Who Never Left Green Bay

Nelson Toburen was one of those Packers whose impact lasted far beyond his playing days. The former Green Bay linebacker was part of two NFL championship teams, and when his football career ended early, he built another life in Wisconsin as an attorney and later as a state district judge. Even after leaving the field, he stayed tied to the franchise and remained a familiar part of the Packers extended family.

Toburens story carried a toughness that fit the era and the organization, from championship runs in Green Bay to the abrupt end of his career in 1962. He went on to earn respect in the courtroom, but his connection to the Packers never really faded, which is why his passing on October 4 lands as more than just a footnote for the team. It feels like the loss of one of the last links to a championship generation that helped define Green Bay. [Read more 🡒]

Jordan Love Faces A Pressure Game The Packers Can't Afford

Jordan Love heads into a divisional matchup with Chicago carrying the kind of early-season numbers that can be read two ways. He has thrown for 1,041 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions, but the more telling number is his 56.5% completion rate, which reflects the uneven rhythm Green Bay has had on offense and the stretches where the quarterback has not looked fully settled.

The next test comes with the Packers needing him to be steadier in the pocket against a Bears defense that figures to bring pressure, all while working behind a patched-together offensive line. Green Bay also knows it has to help him out with the right structure, and the expectation is that the coaching staff will need to lean into a quicker passing plan to keep the game on schedule and give Love a cleaner path to answering the pressure game ahead. Bears-Packers Just Took On An Emotional Twist Packers Fans Will Feel

Mike Ditkas death at 86 has given this weeks Bears-Packers matchup a far more personal edge than a typical rivalry game. The former Chicago tight end and coach was a Hall of Famer who helped define an era in Bears history, including the franchises Super Bowl title in 1985, and both the team and current coach Ben Johnson have already acknowledged the scope of what Ditka meant to the organization.

For Packers fans, the emotional layer is impossible to miss because it changes the feel of a game that is usually all about the present tense. Chicago supporters have been looking for a way to honor one of their most iconic figures in the first meeting since his passing, and the attention now shifts to how that tribute might show up when the Bears take the field against Green Bay.
