The Green Bay Packers have plenty to sort out at cornerback, and a Joey Porter Jr. trade would throw that competition into a completely different gear.
That position has already been one of the most heated battles on the roster. Rookie Brandon Cisse keeps drawing buzz, while Carrington Valentine and K eisean Nixon are trying to hang onto their starting jobs. Add Porter Jr. into that mix, and the whole conversation changes.
What makes this possibility worth watching is the situation in Pittsburgh. Former Packers coach Mike McCarthy is now running the show there, and the Steelers appear to be at an “impasse” with Porter. He has not taken part in training camp or preseason practice activities because of ongoing contract disputes.
Porter, the son of a Steelers legend and a quick fan favorite in Pittsburgh, has developed into one of the more influential young corners in the league. He’s been a major part of the Steelers’ defensive plan over the last several seasons, which makes his absence especially notable and gives a team like Green Bay a chance to see whether the relationship has really frayed.
If the Packers want to level up their defense, Porter Jr. would be a major step in that direction.
The numbers from his 2025 season back that up. PFF had him 3rd among eligible cornerbacks in both Passer Rating Allowed and Forced Incompletions, and 6th in Completion Rate Allowed. Over 14 games, he posted 52 combined tackles, 14 pass deflections and an interception while allowing a 48.5% completion percentage.
That kind of production, especially in only his third season, is why Bleacher Report pegged the Packers as an ideal landing spot for Porter Jr. His talent is obvious, and his early career path has drawn comparisons to his father. If Green Bay could land him for a reasonable trade package, the defense would instantly look more credible.
The Packers had issues surrendering big plays, particularly late in games during the 2025 season. Porter Jr. wouldn’t erase that problem on his own, but he would give Green Bay another big corner who can go toe-to-toe with top receivers. He’d also raise the pressure on Cisse, while pushing the veterans to hold up their end of the competition for starting jobs.
It’s not the most obvious move on the board. But if Porter Jr. truly becomes available, he could be exactly the kind of addition the Packers need.
