The Packers will head into Sunday’s matchup with the Detroit Lions short a key piece on defense, with linebacker Zaire Franklin officially ruled out after he took a knee to the shin in practice.
That leaves Green Bay even more exposed at linebacker, where Edgerrin Cooper was already unavailable. With Franklin out, the Packers are expected to rely on Isaiah McDuffie and Ty’Ron Hopper to handle the workload in the middle.
McDuffie has made his living as a sturdier option against the run, but the passing game is where opponents have picked on him. At 6-foot-1 with limited lateral agility, he’s been vulnerable when offenses target him over the middle.
Detroit has already done that before. In the 2024 meeting at Ford Field, Jared Goff was perfect on all nine passes thrown McDuffie’s way, producing 68 yards and a touchdown in a 34-31 Lions win.
Hopper is a different kind of question mark. Since the Packers selected him in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, he’s been more of a projection than a proven contributor.
In 39 regular season games, he has played only 222 defensive snaps and hasn’t shown much yet. If there’s more there, this is the kind of spot where Green Bay needs it to surface.
The timing is rough, too. Detroit wants to pound the ball with heavy personnel, and Franklin would have been a major part of trying to slow that down, especially with Jahmyr Gibbs driving the attack. Losing him now makes an already difficult assignment that much tougher.
And the bad news may not stop there. The Packers are scheduled for Thursday Night Football in Week 8, and Franklin appears likely to miss that game as well. It’s a frustrating development for the team, but especially for Franklin, who had missed only one game in his NFL career before this injury threatened to sideline him for two.

Packers Weigh Another Colts Target As Trade Cost Looms
The Packers are still looking for a proven interior presence, and DeForest Buckner remains the name to watch as they consider ways to bolster the defensive front. But if that pursuit gets complicated, Green Bay has another Colts connection in the mix, with veteran defensive tackle Justin Houston Stewart emerging as a possible alternative on the market.
Stewart has spent his entire career in Indianapolis and has built a steady track record over multiple seasons, which is part of why he would appeal to a team trying to add experience without waiting for development. The Colts are expected to clear roster space in the coming weeks, so his availability could sharpen quickly, leaving Green Bay to decide how far it wants to go if the bigger target becomes too costly. Packers Injury Report Is Suddenly Raising Concern Before Lions Showdown
Jordan Love getting back to full practice was the encouraging part of the Packers latest injury update before their Week 7 meeting with the Lions, but the rest of the report carried a little more weight than Green Bay probably wanted heading into a key divisional matchup. The list of limited participants grew to 10 players, a reminder that the weeks workload is already getting spread thin at a time when the Packers are trying to settle in for one of their biggest tests of the early season.
Among the names that stood out were linebacker Zaire Franklin and EDGE Lukas Van Ness, who were both newly listed as limited. Bo Melton also was held out of practice because of a back injury, adding another wrinkle to an offense that could use as much continuity as possible. For a Packers team trying to keep pace in the NFC North, the injury report suddenly looks like something to watch closely all the way up to kickoff. [Read more 🡒]
Packers Defense Faces A Bigger Test Than Just Beating Detroit
The rematch with Detroit arrives at a time when both sides are still sorting through the fallout from a rough stretch of injuries, which makes this one feel different from the Thanksgiving meeting. Green Bays defense has been forced to adjust without some key pieces, and the Lions are navigating their own absences as well, so the game is shaping up less like a simple divisional replay and more like a test of which front can hold up longest.
For the Packers, the bigger concern is what kind of pressure they can generate against Jared Goff while also protecting Jordan Loves side of the bargain on offense. Green Bay has been working through the ripple effects of its defensive injuries, including at tackle, and the need to stabilize that spot has only grown more obvious with Detroit back on the schedule. If the pass rush doesnt tilt the field, the rest of the matchup gets a lot harder to manage. [Read more 🡒]
