The Green Bay Packers are making strategic moves to bolster their coaching lineup, bringing on former LSU quarterback TC McCartney as an offensive assistant under head coach Matt LaFleur. This hire, reported by NFL insider Jordan Schultz, is a significant addition to the Packers' coaching staff.
McCartney isn't new to the NFL scene. His journey began with the Cleveland Browns in 2014 as an offensive assistant.
He then moved to the San Francisco 49ers in 2015, where he continued to hone his skills in a similar capacity. After a brief return to LSU in 2016 as a graduate assistant, he was back with the 49ers from 2017 to 2018, working as an offensive assistant and quality control coach.
His experience expanded further when he took on the role of quarterbacks coach for the Denver Broncos in 2019. McCartney then returned to the Browns from 2020 through 2023, serving in various roles including offensive assistant and tight ends coach. Most recently, he was the quarterbacks coach for the New England Patriots in 2024.
McCartney's deep understanding of the Shanahan-style offensive system is a perfect match for LaFleur’s scheme, which is heavily influenced by that coaching philosophy. This alignment is expected to enhance Green Bay's offensive strategies as they continue to refine their approach for the upcoming season.
This hire is part of a broader overhaul by the Packers to reshape their coaching staff. Recently, the team also brought in former Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon to take over from Jeff Hafley, who left in January to become the head coach of the Miami Dolphins.
Additionally, the Packers have added former San Francisco 49ers defensive backs coach Daniel Bullocks, and Cam Achord, a former New York Giants assistant and Super Bowl LIII champion, as their new special teams coordinator.
With these strategic hires, the Packers are clearly focused on strengthening LaFleur’s staff as they gear up for the 2026 season.
