The Green Bay Packers have plenty to reflect on after parting ways with Elgton Jenkins, a versatile lineman who has been a cornerstone of their offensive line for seven seasons. Drafted 44th overall in 2019, Jenkins brought exceptional value to the team, earning Pro Bowl nods in 2020 and 2022. His ability to excel at guard, center, and even tackle made him an invaluable asset.
However, the NFL is a business, and tough decisions are part of the game. The Packers released Jenkins on Monday, a move that will free up $19.5 million in salary-cap space for the 2026 season.
Despite his release, Jenkins is expected to attract considerable interest in free agency. The challenge, however, is his recovery from a significant injury-he broke his ankle in November 2025, ending his season prematurely.
Jenkins' 2025 season was a mixed bag. The Packers had shifted him to center, a role he played in college, after acquiring Aaron Banks and drafting Anthony Belton. Unfortunately, Jenkins struggled to find his rhythm at center, a situation compounded by his absence from much of the offseason program due to contract negotiations.
The Packers ultimately decided not to extend his contract, leading to their decision to move on. Jenkins' skill set makes him a better tackle than center, and a better center than guard, which will be a key consideration for teams eyeing him in free agency.
Spotrac estimates his market value at a four-year, $60 million deal, though he is currently ranked as a center. Jenkins' next team will have to weigh his positional versatility against his recent injury history, but his track record suggests he still has plenty to offer.
