Packers Stun Fans by Adding Former LSU QB to Coaching Staff

Packers strengthen their coaching lineup by bringing in experienced offensive assistant TC McCartney, a move aligned with Matt LaFleur's strategic vision for the team.

The Green Bay Packers are making strategic moves to bolster their coaching staff, bringing in former LSU quarterback TC McCartney as an offensive assistant under head coach Matt LaFleur. This addition, reported by NFL insider Jordan Schultz, signals the Packers' commitment to enhancing their offensive prowess.

McCartney's journey through the coaching ranks is as diverse as it is impressive. He kicked off his NFL career with the Cleveland Browns in 2014, taking on the role of an offensive assistant.

His path then led him to the San Francisco 49ers in 2015, where he continued to hone his skills. After a brief return to college football at LSU in 2016 as a graduate assistant, McCartney found his way back to the 49ers from 2017 to 2018, serving as an offensive assistant and quality control coach.

In 2019, McCartney took on the role of quarterbacks coach for the Denver Broncos, followed by various positions with the Browns from 2020 through 2023, including offensive assistant and tight ends coach. Most recently, he was the quarterbacks coach for the New England Patriots in 2024.

McCartney's deep understanding of the Shanahan-style offensive system is a perfect match for LaFleur’s scheme, which shares roots in that same coaching philosophy. His addition is poised to further enhance Green Bay’s offensive capabilities as the team fine-tunes its staff for the upcoming season.

This move is part of a broader strategy by the Packers to revamp their coaching lineup. In recent months, they've made significant changes, including the hiring of former Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon to take over from Jeff Hafley, who left to become the head coach of the Miami Dolphins.

The Packers have also welcomed former San Francisco 49ers defensive backs coach Daniel Bullocks and former New York Giants assistant and Super Bowl LIII champion Cam Achord as their new special teams coordinator.

With these strategic hires, the Packers are clearly focused on building a robust coaching team as they gear up for the 2026 season.
