Packers Still Have A Real Problem At Left Guard vs Lions

With Aaron Banks' injury status still unresolved, the Packers face ongoing challenges in preparing for their crucial matchup against the Lions.

Green Bay’s uncertainty at left guard is still hanging over the build-up to Week 7, and offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich made it clear on Tuesday that he’s ready for the Aaron Banks saga to stop bouncing back and forth.

Banks has been sidelined even after getting back to practice, leaving the Packers in limbo ahead of their road matchup with the Detroit Lions. Stenavich pointed to the encouraging signs, but the message was plain: the team needs Banks healthy and stable, not stuck in a cycle of false starts.

“We’d love to have him back out there.”

That hope has been tested repeatedly over the last few weeks. Green Bay ruled Banks out for the Week 4 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers because of knee and toe injuries. He then got in limited work on Friday before the Week 5 matchup with the Chicago Bears, only to be listed as doubtful.

The pattern continued in Week 6, when Banks missed the Packers’ 23-13 win over the Dallas Cowboys after entering the game with a questionable designation. His practice time has not yet led to an actual return on game day.

The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman relayed Stenavich’s comments on X, formerly Twitter, describing the back-and-forth nature of Banks’ recovery. Stenavich said the Packers want the veteran lineman back, but only if he can come back and keep playing.

As of Wednesday, Green Bay’s Week 7 injury-report page showed no player designations. Banks’ status for the Lions remained unresolved, with no confirmed return date.

Packers Receiver Situation Just Got More Interesting After Savion Williams Debut

The Packers receiver room keeps shifting, and Savion Williams season debut gave the staff another look at how the rookie might fit once he settles in. Activated from injured reserve on Saturday after missing the first five games with an ankle injury, Williams got his first action of the year in the recent game against the Dallas Cowboys, where Green Bays coaches came away encouraged by the impact he made.

There is still a development curve here, especially with Williams continuing to work on his route running, but the conversation around the group has changed a bit with his return. The Packers also placed Skyy Moore on injured reserve, while Jayden Reed remains on injured reserve, leaving Green Bay with more questions than answers as it tries to piece together the position and figure out how much Williams can handle right away. Packers Suddenly Have A Trade Deadline Debate They Cant Ignore

With the Nov. 10 trade deadline creeping closer, the Packers are being pushed into a familiar kind of roster conversation: not whether they have needs, but how aggressively they want to address them. The speculative shopping list around Green Bay stretches across linebacker, cornerback, defensive tackle and guard, a reflection of a team that has enough talent to stay in the mix but still has a few obvious spots where upgrades could matter.

Among the names being floated are Cody Barton, Donte Jackson, Daron Payne and Landon Dickerson, each tied to a different area of need and each bringing a different price point and level of availability. Dickerson is the most intriguing of the bunch because of his status, and that is where the Packers' debate gets interesting - whether to chase help now, or wait and see how the board breaks as the deadline gets closer. Packers Defense Faces Its Biggest Lions Test Without Two Key Pieces

The Lions ground game has been a useful barometer all season, and Jahmyr Gibbs has often been at the center of it. Detroit has tended to look different when he is efficient and finding the end zone, which is why this matchup matters again for Green Bay, even with the Packers dealing with the absence of Micah Parsons and Edgerrin Cooper on defense.

Even without two key pieces, the Packers have generally done a solid job against opposing running backs by mixing in blitzes and stunts to keep offenses off balance. That approach has helped cover for the missing talent in recent games, but this feels like a bigger test, one that could again hinge on whether Green Bay can keep Gibbs from turning the Lions offense into something far more dangerous than it has looked at times this season.
