After a stretch of striking out on offensive coordinator candidates, the Philadelphia Eagles have found their guy - and it’s a name that might’ve flown under the radar until now: Sean Mannion. The former NFL quarterback and most recently the Packers’ quarterbacks coach is headed to Philly, where he’ll take over play-calling duties and try to get the Eagles’ offense back to flying high.
And if you’re wondering what kind of coach the Eagles are getting, just ask Jordan Love. The Packers’ starting quarterback spent the last season working closely with Mannion and had nothing but praise for his former coach during a recent appearance on the Up and Adams Show with Kay Adams.
“I’m happy for Sean,” Love said. “It’s a great opportunity for him.
That’s the coaching world - always trying to elevate. For him, it’s exciting to go out there, call plays, be an offensive coordinator.”
What stands out about Mannion, according to Love, is his football IQ and firsthand experience under center. Mannion spent six years as an NFL quarterback, suiting up for the Rams (both in St.
Louis and Los Angeles) and the Vikings. That playing background, Love believes, gives Mannion an edge when it comes to connecting with quarterbacks and understanding the flow of the game from their perspective.
“[The Eagles] are getting a very smart coach,” Love continued. “Sean played a long time in the league, so he’s got that expertise as a quarterback.
He was an assistant to a quarterbacks coach, then became the quarterbacks coach, and now he’s an OC. You’ve got to be a smart guy to rise like that.
He’s very detailed and brings a lot of expertise.”
That trajectory - from backup quarterback to rising coach - isn’t just a feel-good story. It’s a testament to Mannion’s understanding of the game and his ability to translate that knowledge into coaching.
After retiring following the 2023-24 season, Mannion joined the Packers’ staff in 2024 and quickly made an impression. As quarterbacks coach last season, he played a role in Jordan Love’s continued development, helping the young QB grow into a more confident, efficient leader under center.
Now, Mannion takes on a much bigger challenge: guiding Jalen Hurts and the Eagles' offense in 2026-27. And while this will be his first run as a full-fledged offensive coordinator, the foundation is there - both in terms of experience and respect from players who’ve worked with him.
"They're getting a very smart coach. Sean played a long time in the league, so he's got that expertise as a quarterback."

For Philadelphia, this hire might not come with the flash of a big-name coordinator, but it could bring the substance they need. Mannion knows the grind of the league, understands quarterback play from the inside out, and has already proven he can connect with and elevate young talent. If he can bring that same energy and precision to Philly’s offense, the Eagles might’ve just found their next great play-caller.
