The boos at Lambeau Field told the story long before the final whistle did. Green Bay’s 35-14 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night left the Packers with a noisy home opener and a locker room split over how to read the crowd’s reaction.
Christian Watson didn’t point the finger at the fans. He pointed it back at the team.
“At the end of the day, it’s an entertainment business, so we have to put a better product out on the field if we want to have the fans have our back,” Watson said. “Obviously, we like to think that the fans will be there through the ups and downs, but we’ve got to put out a better performance than that,” the Packers receiver remarked via The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman.
Watson’s view came after a game in which Green Bay spent most of the night fighting uphill. The offense had trouble stringing together drives, and Atlanta’s pass rush kept forcing the Packers into uncomfortable spots.
Jordan Love finished 28-of-53 for 312 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception, but the production never translated into control. Green Bay also managed just 17 rushing yards.
There were a couple of late bright spots, even in a lopsided defeat. Watson caught a touchdown from Love, giving the Packers something to cheer about near the end. Matthew Golden added another touchdown, though it came with the game already out of reach.
The loss dropped Green Bay to 1-2 heading into Week 4, with the offense carrying plenty of questions. Watson’s message was simple: if the Packers want the Lambeau crowd behind them, they have to give that crowd something worth backing.
