Could Kirk Cousins Be the Packers' Backup Solution?
The Green Bay Packers are on the hunt for a backup quarterback after Malik Willis headed to the Miami Dolphins this offseason. While fans might be dreaming of a trade for the likes of Anthony Richardson or Tanner McKee, Kirk Cousins could emerge as a more realistic option.
Matt Schneidman from The Athletic highlighted Cousins as a potential target for the Packers in free agency. Though Cousins is eyeing a starting role, his ties to Green Bay and head coach Matt LaFleur might make this a compelling match if he remains available.
Adding a seasoned veteran like Cousins could be appealing for the Packers, especially if Jordan Love faces any setbacks. Cousins’ experience offers a safety net for a team with championship aspirations.
Love is locked in as the starter, but his injury history is a concern. While developing talent like Richardson or McKee sounds exciting, the Packers are in win-now mode, especially with the NFC North being so competitive last year.
Currently, the Packers have Desmond Ridder and Kyle McCord on the roster, but neither has the credentials to be a solid backup. Schneidman suggests there’s a chance neither will stick around for Week 1, even though they’ll get a fair shot to prove themselves this offseason.
Cousins brings a wealth of experience, having thrown for 44,700 yards and 298 touchdowns over 14 seasons. His stint with the Atlanta Falcons last year showed he can still perform, even in a backup role, with a 5-3 record in eight starts. The history between Cousins and LaFleur, from their time together with the Washington Commanders, could make this an intriguing reunion.
However, there are challenges. Cousins is approaching 38 and has shown some decline since tearing his Achilles in 2023. Despite this, he’s expressed a desire to continue starting, as he mentioned in an interview with Kay Adams on FanDuel TV.
Financial considerations also come into play. Cousins has earned a significant amount over his career and isn’t likely to settle for a backup salary. He’s known for his negotiation skills, having secured a hefty contract with the Falcons even after his injury.
There’s also the possibility of starting positions opening up during training camps, which Cousins might prefer over a backup role. Alternatively, he could explore broadcasting opportunities, with networks like NBC potentially interested.
While the hurdles are significant, if Ridder and McCord don’t step up, the Packers could present Cousins with one of the best opportunities available. The chance to chase a Lombardi Trophy might just be enough to sway him if his free agency journey extends into the summer.
