Packers Linked to Trevon Diggs' Next Destination in NFL Free Agency

Former Packers cornerback Trevon Diggs might soon find a new home with the Washington Commanders, a move that could reignite past rivalries and bolster their shaky defense.

The first week of NFL free agency is winding down, and Trevon Diggs, the former Green Bay Packers cornerback, remains without a team. Released after the Packers' short playoff stint, Diggs is now searching for his next opportunity.

While there hasn't been a flurry of speculation about where the 27-year-old might land, one destination seems to fit the bill perfectly: the Washington Commanders.

Why the Commanders Make Sense for Diggs

The Washington Commanders are actively seeking help in their secondary. Their defensive struggles last season, allowing 242.5 passing yards per game and ranking near the bottom in yards per reception, highlight the need for a strong cornerback presence. With most top-tier CBs already signed, Diggs emerges as an intriguing option.

Washington might see a similar potential in Diggs as the Packers did when they picked him up off waivers. After parting ways with the Dallas Cowboys, Diggs needed a fresh start, and Green Bay's confidence was rooted in the hope that their then-defensive coordinator, Jeff Hafley, could help him regain his 2021 form-when he led the league in interceptions and Pick-6s.

However, Diggs' time in Green Bay was short-lived. He played just 33 defensive snaps against the Minnesota Vikings and had limited action in the Wild Card loss to the Chicago Bears, leading to his release.

Despite this, Diggs' reputation could entice the Commanders. His history in the NFC East offers a tantalizing narrative of facing his former team, the Cowboys, twice a year. Additionally, reuniting with Dan Quinn, his former defensive coordinator and now the head coach of the Commanders, could reignite the form that earned Diggs All-Pro honors.

Packers Move On, Commanders Eye Opportunity

While there's a slim chance Diggs could return to Green Bay, especially after the release of fellow cornerback Nate Hobbs, the Packers appear content with their current lineup. With players like Keisean Nixon, Javon Bullard, and Carrington Valentine, alongside newcomer Benjamin St-Juste, the Packers seem ready to move forward without Diggs.

For the Commanders, the urgency to sign Diggs could grow as free agency progresses. Securing him would allow Washington to focus on other areas in the draft, knowing they've bolstered their secondary.

As the Packers watch from the sidelines, another team will attempt to reignite Diggs' career. Whether this next chapter leads to success remains uncertain, but Green Bay has made its decision, leaving the potential reward-and risk-to another franchise.
