The Green Bay Packers are shaking things up on defense with Jonathan Gannon stepping in as the new defensive coordinator. As they transition to a 3-4 defensive front, the need for a strong run-stuffing presence in the middle becomes crucial.
Enter D.J. Reader, a seasoned veteran who could be the perfect fit for Green Bay.
Head coach Matt LaFleur has also shuffled the coaching staff, naming DeMarcus Covington as the outside linebackers coach, defensive run-game coordinator, and assistant head coach. This move signals a fresh approach, and with it, the Packers need to bolster their defensive line.
Looking at the current roster, Jonathan Ford and Nazir Stackhouse are the main options for the nose tackle role, but their numbers suggest more is needed. Ford has recorded 15 tackles and one tackle for loss over 13 games, while Stackhouse has 12 tackles in his rookie season. This is where Reader's experience and skill set come into play.
Reader, who has played for the Texans, Bengals, and Lions, brings a wealth of experience with 328 tackles, 27 tackles for loss, 56 QB hits, and 12.5 sacks over his career. While he may not be in his prime at 32, his consistency is reflected in his Pro Football Focus grades, which highlight his steady performance over the years.
Standing at 6'3" and 330 pounds, Reader is built to be a formidable run-stuffer. His addition wouldn't preclude the Packers from drafting another defensive tackle, but it would provide a reliable veteran presence, allowing younger players to develop without being thrust into starting roles prematurely.
The financials also make sense. Reader's projected market value is a two-year, $7.7 million deal, which is manageable given the Packers' $22 million in available cap space. This move would address a critical need without straining the budget.
With the Packers set to debut a revamped defensive scheme, adding Reader could be a strategic move to solidify the line and enhance their run defense. It's a low-risk, high-reward opportunity that could pay dividends as the season unfolds.
