Players tend to sound optimistic about their own recoveries, but that kind of certainty in early August carries weight. With the regular season a little more than a month away, Tom sounds convinced he’ll be back in the lineup and helping steady a group that will be watched closely right away.
The rest of the picture behind him makes that even more important. Jordan Morgan is set to handle left tackle, while Darian Kinnard and Brant Banks are battling for the top swing tackle job. Banks is on the PUP list with a hamstring injury, which leaves Kinnard as the clear frontrunner to back up at the position.
That lack of depth is part of why Tom’s status matters so much. If he’s healthy and available at the start of the year, it helps Green Bay avoid leaning on the least proven part of the room. That would be especially valuable given the offseason losses and the role Tom is expected to play.
There is still a reason to monitor the situation, though. If the injury timeline changes, the Packers may need to look for more help. The options are limited in free agency and on the trade market, but there is still the possibility of adding a piece after roster cuts before the season begins.
