Could the Packers Actually Keep Romeo Doubs? Here’s What We’re Hearing
The Green Bay Packers have a bit of a logjam at wide receiver - and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. With a young, dynamic group that includes Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, and 2025 draft picks Matthew Golden and Savion Williams, the team’s receiving corps is as deep and promising as it’s been in years.
That’s what makes the Romeo Doubs situation so interesting.
On paper, Doubs might look like the odd man out. He’s entering free agency after a solid 2025 campaign where he posted 55 catches for 724 yards and six touchdowns, averaging 13.2 yards per reception. Not eye-popping numbers, but certainly productive - especially considering Reed missed most of the year with a collarbone injury, giving Doubs more opportunities in the passing game.
Still, with Reed expected back at full strength and Golden poised to take on a bigger role, it’s fair to wonder where Doubs fits into the Packers’ plans. And yet, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the door isn’t fully closed on a return to Green Bay.
"I'm expecting both sides to at least have some dialogue and see if a return makes sense," Fowler reported.
That’s a notable development, especially when you consider the context of Doubs’ four-year tenure in Green Bay. Since being drafted in the fourth round back in 2022, the University of Nevada product has consistently found ways to contribute, putting up over 600 yards in each of the past two seasons. But it hasn’t always been smooth sailing.
In 2024, Doubs was suspended midseason after missing back-to-back practices - a move widely believed to be tied to his frustration over a limited role in the offense. That incident raised questions about his long-term future with the team and whether he’d be open to returning without a more defined role or a significant contract offer.
And that’s really the crux of the situation.
From a talent standpoint, Doubs is a 25-year-old receiver with good size, reliable hands, and a knack for making plays downfield. He’s shown he can be productive when given the chance. But with so many mouths to feed in Green Bay’s offense - and with younger, cheaper options waiting in the wings - it’s hard to envision the Packers making a strong financial push to keep him unless they see him as a long-term piece.
That said, the market could change things quickly. There’s no doubt Doubs will draw interest once free agency opens.
Teams in need of a young, starting-caliber wideout who’s still developing could see him as a valuable addition. He’s not a WR1, but he doesn’t need to be - he’s the kind of player who can round out a receiving corps and make clutch plays when it counts.
So where does that leave the Packers?
Right now, it feels like both sides are keeping their options open. Green Bay isn’t slamming the door shut on a reunion, but they’re also preparing for a future that doesn’t include Doubs. And unless something shifts in the coming weeks - whether that’s a team-friendly deal or a change in Doubs’ expectations - a fresh start elsewhere might be the most logical outcome.
Still, in a league where receiver depth can disappear in a hurry, don’t rule out a surprise move. The Packers know what they have in Doubs - and if the price is right, they might just decide to keep him in the fold a little longer.
