Packers Gain Edge as Emanuel Wilson's Free Agency Takes an Intriguing Turn

Emanuel Wilson's future with the Packers gains clarity as the free agency market shifts and key decisions loom.

As the NFL free agency period looms just two weeks away, teams are already maneuvering to position themselves strategically. The Green Bay Packers are at a crossroads with several key players, including Rasheed Walker, Quay Walker, Romeo Doubs, and Malik Willis. The market dynamics for these Packers are still unfolding, but there's already a positive sign for Green Bay regarding one critical playmaker.

In a recent development, NFL insider Ian Rapoport revealed that the Dallas Cowboys have secured running back Javonte Williams for another three years with a $24 million contract. Williams, fresh off a stellar 2025 season with 1,201 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, sets a benchmark for quality starting RBs in free agency. This move also narrows the options for Packers restricted free agent Emanuel Wilson, as the Cowboys are now off the table.

Emanuel Wilson's Prospects in Green Bay

Wilson, while not as high-profile as Williams, has consistently shown his value on the field. Averaging 4.5 yards per carry, he accumulated 998 yards and seven touchdowns over the past two seasons, even stepping up with 151 yards and two touchdowns in two games when Josh Jacobs was sidelined in 2025. The 26-year-old's potential is intriguing, though it's uncertain if any team will take a gamble on him.

For the Packers, the Cowboys' decision is a relief, reducing competition for Wilson. To retain him, Green Bay would need to tender Wilson on a one-year deal, given his status as a restricted free agent. Failing to do so would allow him to enter the unrestricted free agent pool, free to sign elsewhere.

The Packers have shown growing trust in Chris Brooks, giving him significant playtime towards the end of the season and in the playoffs. If Brooks, alongside MarShawn Lloyd (pending his return), is deemed sufficient for backfield depth, the Packers might consider letting Wilson go. However, neither Brooks nor Lloyd has proven to be a reliable long-term RB2 option, making Wilson's retention a prudent choice for Green Bay.
