Jonathan Gannon’s start with the Packers has gone from promising to alarming in a hurry.
Green Bay didn’t see its defensive coordinator change as a devastating loss, especially with Gannon stepping in after helping guide the Philadelphia Eagles to the Super Bowl during his time there. But the first week of the season offered a rough reality check: the Packers were carved up in a 35-point loss to the Falcons, and the defense looked nowhere close to ready.
Atlanta had its way all afternoon. Bijan Robinson piled up more than 200 scrimmage yards, while Drake London put together a massive 194-yard receiving day. The Packers’ offense didn’t exactly do the defense any favors, but this was still an ugly opening for a team that came into the year with bigger goals than just staying relevant in the NFC North.
That bigger picture matters here. Green Bay’s trade for Micah Parsons and the decision to pay Jordan Love sent a clear message about where the franchise thinks it is.
The expectation was that this roster was built to push for contention. Instead, the defense fell apart in a game that exposed just how far things have to go.
Gannon is taking plenty of heat, and for good reason. Michael Penix Jr. was making his first start in nearly a year, and Atlanta really had one consistent threat in London.
Even then, the Packers couldn’t steady themselves. Early in the game, the path was obvious: crowd the line, make Penix throw, shade coverage toward London, and force someone else to beat you.
That didn’t happen. The defense unraveled and looked ineffective in nearly every phase.
The struggles on offense under Matt LaFleur and Love are one thing, but Green Bay can’t talk seriously about meaningful contention if the defense keeps playing like this. A lot of these same pieces were part of the unit that current Miami head coach and former Green Bay DC Jeff Haffley had operating as one of the league’s better groups.
Gannon’s best showing so far came against the New York Jets, when the conditions made moving the ball extremely difficult. Beyond that, the larger sample has not matched expectations, even with Parsons out of the starting lineup. The next question is what adjustments Gannon can make, and whether Green Bay has any clear answer for a secondary that has already been burned badly.
Nobody is questioning what Gannon accomplished before landing this job. That resume is why he got the chance in the first place. But none of that changes how this opening stretch has looked, and Packers fans have every reason to be frustrated and wondering how long this can keep going.
