Packers Eye Pass-Rusher Josh Sweat in Bold Trade Move

Packers eye potential trade for Josh Sweat to bolster their defense amidst strategic roster shifts.

The Green Bay Packers are making waves with their latest acquisition, bringing in defensive tackle Javon Hargrave on a two-year deal. Hargrave, who recently parted ways with the Minnesota Vikings, reunites with his former defensive coordinator, Jonathan Gannon. During their time together in Philadelphia, Hargrave racked up an impressive 18.5 sacks over two seasons, showcasing the dynamic synergy between player and coach.

Rumblings around the league suggest the Packers might not be done yet. They're reportedly eyeing another of Gannon’s former Eagles protégés, Josh Sweat. Sweat, who has been with the Arizona Cardinals since 2025, is rumored to be seeking a new home following Gannon’s departure from the Cardinals' head coaching role.

At 29, Sweat remains a force on the field. He inked a hefty 4-year, $76.4 million deal with Arizona last offseason after a successful stint with the Eagles.

Under Gannon's guidance in Philadelphia, Sweat consistently matched Hargrave's sack totals, delivering 7.5 and 11 sacks in consecutive seasons. His tenure in Arizona only bolstered his reputation, as he notched career-highs with 12 sacks and four forced fumbles last year.

The Packers have had their eye on Sweat for some time, and acquiring him could be strategic. His addition would provide depth and allow Micah Parsons to gradually return from his ACL injury. Sweat’s prowess as a run defender and his familiarity with Gannon’s system make him an attractive prospect.

Timing could be crucial for any potential trade. The Cardinals have a financial incentive to move Sweat before March 20, when a $7.2 million option bonus is due.

Any team picking up Sweat would be on the hook for that bonus, alongside his base salary and additional incentives, totaling $18.1 million. A trade would likely lead to contract restructuring to ease the cap hit.

As the Packers look to bolster their defensive lineup, the potential reunion of Gannon and Sweat could be a game-changer, adding depth and experience to Green Bay’s defensive front.
