Packers Eye Lions Star for a Bold Offseason Move

The Packers are eyeing Lions' free agent Roy Lopez to bolster their defensive line, aiming to address critical weaknesses and outmaneuver divisional rivals this offseason.

The Green Bay Packers' decision to trade Kenny Clark to the Dallas Cowboys landed them the dynamic Micah Parsons, but it also left a significant gap in their defensive tackle depth. Fast forward six months, and that concern still looms large. Devonte Wyatt shows promise but struggles with injuries, leaving a thin line behind him.

Last season, the Packers found themselves in the middle of the pack in run defense, surrendering 114.6 rushing yards per game, ranking them 18th. For defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon to hit the ground running in his first year, bolstering the run defense should be a top priority this offseason.

Enter Roy Lopez, a potential game-changer for the Packers' defensive line. With his contract with the Detroit Lions unlikely to be renewed, the Packers have an opportunity to strengthen their roster by pursuing him in free agency.

The Lions boast a formidable defensive line led by Alim McNeill and D.J. Reader, with Lopez serving as a key rotational player. In Green Bay, Lopez could potentially start on the left side over Colby Woolen or fill in on the right if Walker faces more injury setbacks.

Financially, Lopez is an attractive option. Spotrac estimates his market value at a three-year, $19.06 million deal, or about $6.4 million annually. With the Packers currently $1.5 million over the cap, Lopez represents the kind of budget-friendly acquisition that general manager Brian Gutekunst might pursue.

Despite playing just 425 snaps last season, Lopez made his presence felt with the Lions. His Pro Football Focus grade of 68.7 placed him 30th among 134 eligible defensive linemen. His stats include 19 solo tackles, 14 run stops, 13 pressures, eight hurries, three sacks, two quarterback hits, and a batted pass.

While Lopez might not be a household name, his experience across three franchises and various systems makes him a versatile asset for the Packers. The rivalry between the Packers and Lions is fierce, but in the world of professional football, opportunities often trump emotions. If Green Bay offers Lopez a better shot at playing time, it’s hard to see him passing it up.
