The Green Bay Packers are heading into the offseason with some notable changes on the coaching front - just not the ones many fans were expecting. While special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia is sticking around, defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley and quarterbacks coach Sean Mannion are both on the move, taking new jobs elsewhere. And while Hafley’s departure will certainly shake things up on defense, it’s Mannion’s exit that could have the bigger ripple effect on the offensive side of the ball.
Mannion may have only spent a year as the Packers’ quarterbacks coach and just two years total in the NFL coaching ranks, but he made a lasting impression in a short amount of time. His rise was swift - and well-earned.
Inside the Packers’ facility, he quickly became a trusted voice and a key figure in Jordan Love’s development. That kind of impact doesn’t go unnoticed, and it’s why Mannion is now stepping into an offensive coordinator role elsewhere.
Losing a fast-rising coach like Mannion is a blow for Matt LaFleur’s staff, no question. But the Packers may not need to look far for his replacement. In fact, they might already have the ideal candidate in-house: senior offensive assistant Luke Getsy.
Why Luke Getsy Fits the Bill
Getsy isn’t just a familiar face - he’s a proven one. He knows the Packers' system, understands LaFleur’s offensive philosophy inside and out, and has a strong track record with quarterbacks.
From 2019 to 2021, Getsy served as the team’s quarterbacks coach, working directly with Aaron Rodgers during some of his most efficient seasons. He was also in the room when Jordan Love was drafted in 2020, giving him a head start on building rapport with the team’s current franchise quarterback.
After his initial stint in Green Bay, Getsy took on the offensive coordinator role with the Chicago Bears. While the results there were mixed - in part due to a shaky offensive line and a young, developing quarterback in Justin Fields - it’s hard to pin the struggles solely on Getsy. The situation was far from stable, and the tools at his disposal were limited.
He then took on another tough assignment with the Las Vegas Raiders, working as offensive coordinator during a 2024 season that featured a revolving door at quarterback: Gardner Minshew, Aidan O’Connell, and Desmond Ridder all saw time under center. Not exactly a recipe for offensive fireworks.
But now, Getsy is back in Green Bay, and the circumstances are far more favorable. He’s got a quarterback in Jordan Love who has taken a massive leap forward, evolving into one of the league’s most efficient and poised signal-callers. Love’s decision-making, accuracy, and command of the offense have all improved dramatically - and that’s in no small part thanks to Mannion’s guidance.
A Seamless Transition?
Replacing Mannion won’t be easy. His impact on Love’s development was significant, and his departure leaves a real void.
But if there’s anyone equipped to step in and keep that momentum going, it’s Getsy. He already has LaFleur’s trust, he knows the personnel, and he’s worked with Love before.
Continuity matters in quarterback development, and Getsy offers exactly that.
There’s also the matter of the quarterback room beyond Love. With Malik Willis likely heading elsewhere in free agency, the Packers will need to bring in a new backup. Whoever that ends up being, Getsy would be in a strong position to help integrate them into the system and keep the offense humming.
Still a Premier Destination
Even with some turnover on the coaching staff, the Packers remain one of the NFL’s most attractive landing spots for assistant coaches. They’ve got a young star at quarterback, a stable front office, and a head coach in LaFleur who’s built a winning culture. That combination makes the quarterbacks coach position a coveted one - whether it goes to Getsy or someone else.
But if Green Bay wants to keep things steady and build on the progress they’ve made with Jordan Love, promoting from within might be the smartest move. And Luke Getsy, with his experience, familiarity, and quarterback pedigree, checks every box.
