Packers Eye De'Von Achane After Dolphins Trade Jaylen Waddle

In the midst of a transformative rebuild, the Dolphins' trade of Jaylen Waddle opens the door for Packers to potentially secure running back De'Von Achane in a strategic move resonating with Green Bay connections.

The Miami Dolphins are clearly embracing a rebuild, highlighted by their decision to trade standout wide receiver Jaylen Waddle to the Denver Broncos. This move sets the stage for potential opportunities for other teams, like the Green Bay Packers, to swoop in and acquire star running back De'Von Achane.

Achane's future with the Dolphins has been uncertain throughout the offseason, but the recent trade has thrust his status into the spotlight. The question now is whether he'll be part of Miami's long-term plans. With the well-documented connection between the Dolphins and Packers, the possibility of Achane heading to Green Bay feels increasingly real.

New Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley, general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan, and quarterback Malik Willis all have ties to Green Bay, fueling speculation about Achane's potential move. For Packers fans, this connection creates a tempting scenario where Achane could join their ranks following the Waddle trade.

However, it’s not just the Miami-Green Bay pipeline that makes an Achane trade appealing. The Packers have a pressing need for another running back, and they also possess a potential replacement for Waddle in their wide receiver corps, making a swap advantageous for both sides.

Although the Packers lack first-round picks in 2026 and 2027, they have other assets. Teams are eyeing their wideouts, Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks. Reed, in particular, could serve as an ideal Waddle replacement, potentially reducing the draft capital needed in an Achane deal.

Additionally, the Packers are set to have multiple fourth-round picks next year, including compensatory selections and one from trading pass-rusher Rashan Gary to the Dallas Cowboys. A package involving Reed or Wicks and these mid-round picks might be enticing enough for Miami.

The departure of Emanuel Wilson in free agency has left the Packers with a significant gap in their backfield. They need a partner for star running back Josh Jacobs and someone who can eventually take over the lead role. Achane fits the bill perfectly, offering both immediate support and future potential.

Jacobs' current contract with the Packers includes a $12.5 million signing bonus from 2024, but no long-term guarantees. This gives Green Bay the flexibility to retain the three-time Pro Bowler as needed while also allowing them to upgrade when the opportunity arises.
