Packers Eye Backup QB Amid Major Offseason Changes

Could the Packers transform Anthony Richardson into their next star backup QB amid offseason shifts and opportunities?

The Green Bay Packers are navigating a whirlwind of changes this offseason. With several coaches departing, most notably Jeff Hafley heading to the Miami Dolphins as head coach, the Packers are bracing for more shifts as free agency looms in March.

Among the players expected to move on is quarterback Malik Willis, who’s likely to secure a deal elsewhere, possibly reuniting with Hafley and Jon-Eric Sullivan in Miami. This leaves the Packers with a vacancy at QB2.

Enter Anthony Richardson, the Indianapolis Colts quarterback who might just be the perfect fit for Green Bay. ESPN's Stephen Holder recently noted that Richardson is likely to request a trade, as the Colts are set to move forward with Daniel Jones as their starter.

The Packers struck gold with Willis, who flourished under their system. Taking a similar chance on Richardson could pay off handsomely.

Despite a rocky tenure with the Colts, Richardson’s potential is undeniable. Drafted fourth overall in 2023, his time in Indianapolis has been marred by challenges.

Over three seasons, he played in 15 games, with an 8-7 record, completing 177 of 350 passes for 2,400 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. Accuracy and game speed have been hurdles, compounded by injuries like a shoulder issue and a fractured orbital bone.

The Colts’ decision to move on with Jones marks the end of Richardson's chapter there, but it could be the beginning of a promising one in Green Bay. The Packers didn’t dismiss Willis based on his past struggles; instead, they saw potential for growth. Under their guidance, Willis transformed, completing 70 of 89 passes for 972 yards and six touchdowns without an interception in three starts.

Richardson, with one year remaining on his contract, could be a valuable backup for the Packers. With no pressure to start immediately, he can focus on honing his skills in a supportive environment.

This move could benefit both Richardson and the Packers, providing a solid backup option while allowing Richardson the time to develop. It’s an opportunity Green Bay should seriously consider as they look to fill the QB2 role.
