Packers Release Trevon Diggs, Sign Crumedy and McCord to Reserve/Future Deals
The Green Bay Packers are making early moves this offseason, parting ways with veteran cornerback Trevon Diggs just three weeks after claiming him off waivers. The team announced the release on January 20, signaling a quick end to what was a short-lived stint in Green Bay for the former All-Pro.
Diggs, a first-team All-Pro in 2021 and a six-year NFL veteran, was brought in on December 31 to bolster a Packers secondary that had just lost Nate Hobbs to injured reserve. The idea was clear: add a proven playmaker with big-game experience to a young and injury-depleted cornerback room ahead of a playoff push.
He saw meaningful action in the regular-season finale against the Minnesota Vikings, logging 33 defensive snaps and recording two solo tackles. But when it came to the postseason, Diggs was barely on the field. In the wild-card loss to the Chicago Bears, he played just one snap in the first quarter and registered one assisted tackle.
Whether it was scheme fit, readiness, or simply a numbers game, the Packers decided to move on.
Alongside Diggs' release, Green Bay also announced a pair of reserve/future signings: defensive lineman Jaden Crumedy and quarterback Kyle McCord.
Crumedy, a 6-foot-4, 301-pound interior lineman, was a sixth-round pick in the 2024 draft and spent the last two seasons bouncing between the Carolina Panthers' active roster and practice squad. In limited action-eight games total-he managed 15 tackles (four solo), half a sack, and a quarterback hit. He’s got the size and some flashes on tape that suggest he could push for a rotational role in the trenches.
McCord, meanwhile, enters the fold as a developmental quarterback. Drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the sixth round last year, he spent his entire rookie season on the practice squad. The Packers clearly see something worth investing in, and with reserve/future contracts, it’s all about upside and competition heading into offseason workouts.
While the release of Diggs closes the door on a potential veteran impact in the secondary, the additions of Crumedy and McCord show Green Bay is already looking ahead-stockpiling talent and building depth for what they hope is a deeper run next season.
