With final cuts just days away, the Packers could get another look at a market that changes fast and without much warning.
NFL teams have until Sunday at 5 p.m. CT to get down to 53 players, and that means a wave of roster churn is coming across the league.
The number drops by more than 40%, so there’s going to be a lot of movement, and not just through simple releases. This week has already brought trades for players who might otherwise have been cut loose next week.
On Monday, the New England Patriots dealt wideout Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans for defensive back Jaylen Reed. The next day, the New York Giants sent offensive lineman Joshua Ezeudu to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a 2028 seventh-round pick. More deals could still be on the way before the deadline hits.
Still, plenty of players won’t be moved by trade. They’ll get the call from the “Turk,” be waived, or, if they have at least four accrued seasons, be released outright. From there, most land on the open market and start looking for practice-squad opportunities, often with the same team that let them go.
The Packers usually lean more toward keeping a few of their own cut-down casualties than chasing players other teams discard, but this is one of the few windows where a surprise addition can emerge. A handful of useful players could soon become available, and Green Bay will have a chance to pounce if one of them looks like an upgrade.
