Packers Coach Matt LaFleur May Let Key Assistant Join Dolphins

With coaching changes sweeping through Green Bay and Miami, Matt LaFleur faces a pivotal decision that could reshape the Packers offensive future.

The Green Bay Packers might be on the verge of losing another key piece of their coaching staff-this time to the Miami Dolphins. And while it would be a lateral move on paper, there’s a real sense that head coach Matt LaFleur could be open to it, especially if it means giving his offensive coordinator, Adam Stenavich, a shot at calling plays-something he doesn't currently do in Green Bay.

This offseason has already seen two major departures from the Packers’ organization to South Beach. First, longtime personnel executive Jon-Eric Sullivan took over as the Dolphins’ new general manager.

His first major hire? Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, who’s now Miami’s head coach.

That’s a significant one-two punch pulled from the heart of Green Bay’s front office and coaching staff.

Now, there’s buzz that Sullivan and Hafley could be eyeing another familiar face to join their rebuild in Miami: Adam Stenavich. NFL insider Albert Breer recently floated the idea, suggesting that LaFleur might actually support the move if it gave Stenavich the opportunity to call plays-a responsibility he hasn’t had during his tenure as offensive coordinator.

Let’s rewind for a second. Stenavich has been with the Packers since 2019, arriving the same year LaFleur took the reins.

He started out as the offensive line coach, added run game coordinator duties in 2021, and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2022. But even with the title, LaFleur has retained play-calling duties, leaving Stenavich in more of a supporting role.

So why would LaFleur let him go now?

For one, LaFleur has a reputation as a coach who supports the growth of his assistants. If the Dolphins offer Stenavich a chance to run the offense and call plays, that’s a step up professionally-even if the title stays the same. LaFleur, by all accounts, values that kind of upward mobility for his staff.

But there’s another layer to this: LaFleur is currently evaluating his coaching staff after receiving a contract extension, and there’s a sense that changes are coming. The Packers showed promise this past season, but if they want to make the leap from playoff hopeful to legitimate contender, innovation on offense might be necessary. That could mean a new voice in the room, someone who brings different ideas and energy to the offensive side of the ball.

One name that’s been quietly floating around is Nathaniel Hackett. He spent this past season with the Packers in a consulting role, helping the defense by offering offensive insights.

But from 2019 to 2021, Hackett was the offensive coordinator under LaFleur, and during that stretch, Green Bay had one of the league’s most efficient red zone offenses. The chemistry between LaFleur and Hackett was evident, and a reunion wouldn’t be out of the question if Stenavich moves on.

Whether it’s Hackett or someone else, the idea of refreshing the offensive approach in Green Bay is on the table. And if Stenavich does head to Miami, it could be the opening LaFleur needs to reshape his staff and retool the offense for the next chapter.

Bottom line: Adam Stenavich’s time in Green Bay may be winding down. And if he ends up in Miami, it won’t just be another coaching move-it could be the spark that leads to a broader shift in how the Packers approach offense moving forward.
