The Green Bay Packers are in the middle of an offseason coaching shuffle that’s starting to feel more like a full-blown exodus-especially on the defensive side of the ball. After defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley accepted the Miami Dolphins’ head coaching job, he didn’t leave town quietly. Hafley brought a handful of Packers assistants with him to South Beach, including linebackers coach Sean Duggan, who’s now calling the shots as Miami’s new defensive coordinator.
But it’s not just the defense that’s been hit. Quarterbacks coach Sean Mannion took the offensive coordinator job with the Philadelphia Eagles, and he didn’t go alone either-he brought a couple of Green Bay staffers with him, further thinning Matt LaFleur’s coaching ranks.
To the Packers’ credit, they’ve moved quickly to plug the holes, bringing in replacements across the board. Still, the departures may not be over just yet.
DeMarcus Covington Now in the Mix for Raiders DC Job
The latest name to watch? DeMarcus Covington, Green Bay’s defensive line coach and run game coordinator. According to reports, Covington is set to interview for the Las Vegas Raiders’ defensive coordinator position-the last open DC job left in this hiring cycle.
Covington’s résumé is solid. Before joining the Packers ahead of the 2025 season, he served as the New England Patriots’ defensive coordinator in 2024.
While his stint in Foxborough ended when head coach Jerod Mayo was dismissed after just one season, Covington had been a part of the Patriots’ coaching tree since 2017. He got his NFL start under Bill Belichick, which still carries weight in league circles.
In Green Bay, Covington played a key role in shaping a young, aggressive defensive front that showed flashes of dominance during the 2025 season. His ability to develop talent and scheme against the run made him a valuable piece of the Packers’ defensive puzzle-and now, it’s no surprise that teams with coordinator vacancies are taking notice.
For the Raiders, who just completed their head coaching hire, Covington brings both experience and upside. He’s coached under two very different systems-Belichick’s methodical, detail-oriented approach and LaFleur’s more modern, player-focused style. That versatility could be exactly what a team like Las Vegas is looking for as it tries to retool its defense.
As for the Packers, they’re watching another key assistant potentially walk out the door. And while the front office has shown it can reload quickly, the sheer number of departures this offseason is testing the limits of that resilience. If Covington does land the job in Vegas, it’ll mark yet another chapter in a winter of change for Green Bay’s coaching staff.
The NFL coaching carousel is always in motion, and right now, the Packers are right in the middle of the spin.
