Packers Are Still Waiting On A Josh Jacobs Decision

As the NFL's suspension announcements loom, the Packers face uncertainty with star running back Josh Jacobs under review and crucial players already sidelined.

The NFL’s latest round of discipline has Green Bay sitting in a holding pattern, and Josh Jacobs is still the name Packers fans are watching most closely.

Jacobs was not among the three players the league announced Friday as suspended for the upcoming regular season, but his situation remains unresolved. The NFL is investigating an alleged domestic incident, and earlier this week ESPN’s Adam Schefter said the matter was “under review” with the league.

"It's also possible... the Green Bay Packers are going to lose Josh Jacobs," Schefter said. "That also still is under review and still a pending situation with the NFL."

Friday’s announced suspensions came for Titans DB Nazeeh Johnson, who was hit with six games for violating the PED policy, Commanders DE Dorance Armstrong, who received a one-game suspension for violating the personal-conduct policy, and Bills DT Phidarian Mathis, who was suspended three games for violating the substance-abuse policy.

For now, Green Bay is left waiting to see whether more league discipline is coming before Week 1.

There’s also the football side of the equation, and that’s part of what makes this so tense for the Packers. Jacobs has been dealing with a groin injury this preseason, though head coach Matt LaFleur said Friday he was hopeful the running back could get back on the field later next week.

"Matt LaFleur said RB Josh Jacobs (groin) could 'potentially' return for this upcoming week of training camp practices 'but it wouldn't be until later in the week.'"

The Packers badly need him available. Jacobs ran for 929 yards and 13 touchdowns last season, and he added 36 catches for 282 yards and a score.

Green Bay also saw its second-leading rusher from last season, Emanuel Wilson, leave for the Seattle Seahawks in free agency. That leaves Damien Martinez, Chris Brooks, Pierre Strong Jr., and MarShawn Lloyd on the depth chart.

In Thursday night’s 28-9 preseason loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Martinez led the Packers in rushing with eight carries for 20 yards. Lloyd had three carries for 10 yards, and Strong finished with three carries for nine yards.

Packers Just Got A Reminder How Fast Quarterback Depth Can Change

Quarterback depth can look settled right up until a preseason snap changes the conversation, and the Packers saw a reminder of that in their game against Pittsburgh. A reserve passer who entered as the third quarterback immediately made the most of the opportunity, hitting a 74-yard strike on his first attempt and giving the Steelers a jolt of momentum in a game that quickly became about more than roster trimming.

The performance only sharpened the competition behind the top of the depth chart, where Mason Rudolph still sits as Aaron Rodgers' primary backup. For Green Bay, it was another example of how quickly a fringe quarterback can turn one showing into real noise, and why those final spots are never as secure as they seem in August. [Read more 🡒]

Matt LaFleur Just Sent A Clear Message About Protecting Jordan Love

Protection of Jordan Love is becoming a clear priority in Green Bay, and Matt LaFleur made sure that message was heard during practice. When a team period got too physical and a defender drove a teammate into Love, LaFleur immediately cut it off and sent the rookie off the field, a reminder that the Packers are not looking to turn camp reps into unnecessary punishment for their quarterback.

Loves importance hardly needs spelling out after signing his four-year, $220 million deal in 2024, and the stakes around his development remain obvious. He has played well enough to keep belief high, but he is also being asked to take another step, especially with accuracy and timing still central to his growth. For Green Bay, keeping him upright is part of the equation, but so is making sure the moments in practice are helping him sharpen the details that matter most. [Read more 🡒]

Packers Suddenly Have A Jordan Love Problem They Cant Ignore

Jordan Love got the preseason opener start for Green Bay, and while the box score was brief, the larger concern was what came after him. Love finished 3 of 5 for 18 yards, a quiet enough night on its own, but the Packers were also trying to get a look at the rest of the quarterback room after the loss of Malik Willis left the depth chart thinner than it was before camp opened.

Tyrod Taylor was the main backup and looked limited in his debut, while Kyle McCord also showed the kind of growing pains that can make a team uneasy if it needs someone ready sooner than later. For a Packers group that wants to feel secure behind Love, the next question is whether the answer is already in house or whether the front office needs to keep an eye on possible roster moves to find more help.
