The Packers are adding more competition to a safety room that has already been asked to carry plenty. Green Bay is signing former Florida safety Trey Dean III after a workout, according to Jordan Schultz, giving the team another experienced body as it tries to strengthen the back end.
“Sources: The #Packers are signing free agent S Trey Dean III after working him out today,” Schultz reported. “Dean, the former Florida Gator, won a Super Bowl with the Chiefs and most recently starred in the USFL - where he won another championship.”
Dean’s path to Green Bay has taken him through plenty of stops. He went undrafted in 2023 after four seasons at Florida, then landed with the New York Jets on the practice squad that year. He never appeared in a regular-season game for New York.
From there, Dean moved on to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024 and was part of the roster that won the Super Bowl. After a brief stint with the Cleveland Browns following that title season, he turned to the USFL.
The league gave him another championship run, first with the DC Defenders in 2025 and then with the St. Louis Blackhawks in 2026.
Dean played six games for the Battlehawks and finished with 20 tackles and a sack.
Green Bay’s current starting safeties for the 2026 season are Xavier McKinney and Evan Williams. McKinney put together a strong season of his own, posting 72 solo tackles, two interceptions, a forced fumble, and seven pass breakups.

The Packers secondary took another hit this week when Johnathan Baldwin was waived with an injury designation after hurting his knee in practice.
