The Green Bay Packers made a receiver move on Sunday, and Kisean Johnson was the one who won the job.
With Matthew Golden and Jayden Reed dealing with short-term injuries, Green Bay brought in a small group of wideouts for workouts between Friday’s Family Night practice and Sunday’s media-open session. Johnson, Kobe Hudson and Cornell Powell all got a look. In the end, Johnson stood out enough to earn a spot on the Packers’ 91-man roster.
To make room, Green Bay waived cornerback Marlon Jones with an injured designation. Jones, a rookie UDFA, had signed with the Packers in mid-May.
This is Johnson’s second run with the team. He previously joined Green Bay’s practice squad on January 6, right before the postseason loss to the Chicago Bears.
If his name slipped through the cracks during the nearly 30-player shuffle that closed out the season, that would be understandable. Johnson was not brought back on a reserve/futures deal after the season, which left him as a free agent.
Johnson’s college path included a strong stop at Alabama State, where he was an FCS All-American, before he transferred to Western Kentucky. At WKU, he posted 75 catches for 925 yards and seven touchdowns in his lone season at the FBS level.
In 2025, Johnson initially signed as a UDFA with the Cleveland Browns before returning to Green Bay. Dane Brugler of The Athletic ranked him 124th among receivers in the 2025 class and gave him a true free agent grade after he measured about 6’0.5” and 216 pounds at WKU’s pro day. He also ran a 4.63-second 40-yard dash and recorded a 33” vertical jump in the pre-draft process.

Packers Suddenly Have A Veteran Tight End Option At The Right Time
The Packers tight end room has thinned at exactly the wrong time, leaving the offense with a real need for help as the season moves along. Green Bay has been piecing together answers at the position, and that has put a premium on any experienced option who can step in quickly and stabilize the group.
Zach Ertz suddenly fits that profile. The veteran tight end is coming off ACL rehab, has been cleared for football activities and is interested in another season, which makes him a natural name to watch for a Packers team looking for depth and reliability. If Green Bay decides to add him, Ertz would bring a proven presence to a spot that has needed it. [Read more 🡒]
Packers Camp Injuries Are Suddenly Hitting Two Key Position Battles
Green Bays preseason work kept rolling Sunday inside the teams indoor facility, with practice closed to the public but open to the media a couple days after Family Night. The session brought a welcome development on the health front, as running back Chris Brooks and defensive lineman Javon Hargrave both came off the physically unable to perform list and got back on the field, a useful step for two players whose availability matters in crowded summer competitions.
The receiver room, though, is starting to feel the strain of camp injuries. The Packers responded by bringing back Kisean Johnson while waiving cornerback Marlon Jones with an injury designation, a roster shuffle that underscores how quickly one position can get stretched thin when bodies start to go down. Several other players are still either on the PUP list or sitting out practice, so the next few days will matter for anyone trying to carve out a role before the reps tighten. [Read more 🡒]
