Matt LaFleur’s latest comments on Josh Jacobs only poured fuel on a fire that was already burning.
One day after Jacobs pleaded no contest, the Packers coach was asked whether that changed his view of the running back. LaFleur didn’t budge.
“Well, yeah, because I know the guy, and I know the character of the guy, so I’ve said it many times.”
“And unfortunately, situations occur in life and it’s just an unfortunate situation.”
He doubled down again when reporters pressed him later, saying, “Guys, I’m not getting into any of this until the league completes their investigation.”
That was enough to send fans and observers after him online, with plenty calling the response weak, cowardly, and worse.
Jacobs pleaded no contest Thursday to misdemeanor battery and criminal damage to property. He admitted the probable-cause facts in court, according to the source report, and he still remains on the Commissioner’s Exempt List. Green Bay also still has him on the roster.
The case began with a May call to Jacobs’ home. Police initially booked a felony, then prosecutors later filed two Class A misdemeanors. Jacobs received a $1,000 fine and a deferred deal on the property count.
LaFleur had already said in August that he fully expected Jacobs to stay. On Friday, though, he declined to explain why a guilty finding still leaves the back on the team, sticking instead to the league process.
The reaction online was immediate. Zach Kruse of Packers Wire wrote, “That’s the public statement from the head coach? Pretty weak.”
Jacob Infante of Pro Football Network was even more direct: “What a cowardly stance from Matt LaFleur to take on the issue.”
Others took aim at the organization as a whole. One comment read, “This is genuinely pathetic. From the entire organization,” followed by, “The fact he’s even still on the team is an embarrassment and his head coach is openly defending his character”
Another response said, “Pretty unfortunate for the victim,” while one more added, “Oh yeah situations where one beats a woman just totally happen.”
For now, the NFL has the next move. Jacobs cannot practice or play until the league finishes its review, and LaFleur said he won’t schedule him for Minnesota. But he also didn’t walk back the character language he used all summer, which had already drawn criticism during OTAs.
Friday’s comments only sharpened the divide. Jacobs said yes when the judge asked if the complaint facts were true.
LaFleur still called it an unfortunate situation. That’s the gap that turned the spotlight squarely onto the coach.
