Matt LaFleur isn’t hiding what he wants from Christian Watson heading into the Packers’ meeting with the Vikings: more snaps, more production, and a lot more impact.
Green Bay’s offseason moves made the pecking order pretty clear. Letting Romeo Doubs walk and then trading Dontayvion Wicks signaled real confidence in the receivers still standing, and Watson sits at the center of that group.
His new extension only reinforces that status. But the message from LaFleur is that the spotlight comes with pressure, especially with the running game carrying so much uncertainty without Josh Jacobs.
Addressing the media, LaFleur made the expectation plain.
“I think really what it's gonna be is gonna be more opportunity for everybody in that room-or I should say for our three main guys-and we need them out there for as many plays as humanly possible. We know that this guy, speaking of Christian, I think all three of those guys are difference makers, but we need them out on the field for as many snaps as possible," LaFleur said (h/t MicNuggets)
That’s the heart of the Watson story. The Packers clearly believe in him, but they also know why some people hesitated when the extension was handed out. He hasn’t stayed healthy enough, even though when he has been on the field, he’s been Green Bay’s most explosive and dominant playmaker.
The team protected itself in the deal, too. The final number may look big, but the guaranteed money doesn’t match that headline value, which puts the burden squarely on Watson to earn the rest.
And he’s heard the noise all offseason. Some mocked Green Bay for giving him another extension, and with no accolades on the résumé, Watson is walking into a season where he has to change the conversation the hard way.
The Packers do have other options. Tucker Kraft and Jayden Reed are in the mix, and they were hoping Matthew Golden would make a real jump after a disappointing rookie season. On paper, there’s enough talent around Jordan Love to make the passing game work.
But there’s still a difference between being useful and being the guy who takes over. Green Bay has spent too long collecting good players without a true star, and Watson is the one they’re betting can become that rare difference-maker - their first clear go-to receiver since Davante Adams.
The Vikings won’t be an easy place to start proving it. Watson has 11 catches for 127 yards and no touchdowns in five career games against Minnesota, and that’s not nearly enough for what the Packers need on Sunday.
With no timetable for Josh Jacobs’ debut and questions up front on the interior offensive line, Green Bay may be forced to lean on the passing game more than LaFleur would prefer. The coach has already put his receivers on notice. Now it’s Watson’s turn to answer.
