ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky isn’t backing away from his Jordan Love praise.
A year after predicting the Green Bay Packers quarterback would win NFL MVP, Orlovsky is still talking about Love like one of the league’s best pure throwers. On ESPN’s “Get Up” on Aug. 24, he called Love’s talent “insane” and made clear he believes the Packers starter is still getting shortchanged.
“This dude is so good,” Orlovsky said.
Love is heading into Year 4 as Green Bay’s starter after what was easily his most steady season as a pro. He sharpened his accuracy, cut down on interceptions and still managed to miss the final two-and-a-half games of the regular season because of a concussion before returning for the playoffs.
Orlovsky’s bigger point was simple: the respect still isn’t there.
“I somehow, still truly deep down, believe that this dude is so undervalued,” Orlovsky said.
He then pointed to the effortless nature of Love’s throwing ability as the trait that separates him.
“Some of the throws he makes and the way that it is effortless are absurd,” he said of Love.
Love certainly wasn’t perfect last season. He had costly interceptions against the Cleveland Browns and Carolina Panthers. But he also delivered the kind of high-end throws Orlovsky was talking about, even if he didn’t name them all.
There was the late touchdown to Christian Watson in the corner of the end zone against the New York Giants in blustery conditions. There were the sharp throws under the lights at the Pittsburgh Steelers. And on Thanksgiving, he hit a fourth-down pass late in the fourth quarter to help seal a road win over the Detroit Lions.
“I think he is so sensational,” Orlovsky said. “He is sensational throwing the football.”
Orlovsky even put Love in the same conversation, strictly as a thrower, with Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen and Joe Burrow. Mahomes has won MVP twice, Jackson twice and Allen once.
“He would be in that category … flat out throwing the ball,” Orlovsky said of Love.
Green Bay wraps up training camp this week with its final preseason game Friday, Aug. 28, at home against the Arizona Cardinals. Love won’t play after appearing in each of the first two exhibition games.
The next big step comes Sept. 13, when the Packers open against the Minnesota Vikings. That’s the start of Love’s push for his first MVP and Green Bay’s attempt to make a fourth straight playoff run. The Packers went 4-2 in divisional games last season.
