Green Bay Packers Eye Big 10 Star for Key Offensive Line Role

The Green Bay Packers may have found a promising replacement for Elgton Jenkins in Michigan State's versatile Matt Gulbin, a potential fit for their evolving offensive line needs.

The Green Bay Packers are gearing up for a transformative offseason as they prepare for the 2026 NFL season. The offensive line, in particular, is set for a shake-up, with multiple starters expected to depart due to free agency or salary cap constraints. Of the five linemen who started in Week One, only Zach Tom and Aaron Banks are set to return.

Sean Rhyan, the starting right guard, and Rasheed Walker, the left tackle, are both entering free agency and are not anticipated to re-sign with the Packers. However, the team has potential replacements lined up, with Anthony Belton ready to step in for Rhyan and Jordan Morgan poised to protect Jordan Love’s blindside.

Elgton Jenkins, a two-time Pro Bowl left guard who transitioned to center, is likely to be released as a salary cap casualty, which would save the Packers nearly $20 million. To fill his spot, Green Bay might look toward the upcoming NFL Draft.

Enter Matt Gulbin, a center prospect standing six-foot-four and weighing 312 pounds, projected to go between the third and fifth rounds. Snagging him would allow the Packers to address other needs, such as cornerback, in earlier rounds.

Gulbin’s scouting report paints a picture of a player well-suited for Green Bay’s style. He thrives in an inside zone or gap-heavy running scheme, excelling at the point of attack with power and leverage. His run-blocking prowess is complemented by a tenacious finishing mentality, making him a formidable presence on the line.

In pass protection, Gulbin’s numbers in 2025 were nearly untouchable. While the competition will be stiffer at the NFL level, his ability to anchor and reset should translate well. Teams that emphasize duo, power, and inside zone runs will find him a valuable asset.

Given head coach Matt LaFleur’s penchant for calling inside runs, Gulbin’s skill set aligns well with the Packers' offensive strategy. His capabilities as a pass blocker are also a crucial asset.

However, Gulbin is relatively new to the center position, having played there for only one season. This lack of experience could pose challenges if he’s expected to fully replace Jenkins immediately.

General Manager Brian Gutekunst values versatility in offensive linemen, and Gulbin’s experience at both guard and center makes him an attractive option. At the very least, he would provide solid depth across the line, ready to contribute wherever needed.
