The Miami Dolphins are narrowing in on their next head coach, and one name is starting to stand out: Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. According to reports, Hafley is set for a second in-person interview with the team this week - a clear sign he’s among the finalists for the job.
This isn’t coming out of nowhere. Hafley has a strong connection to new Dolphins GM John-Eric Sullivan, and that relationship could be playing a role in his candidacy. But make no mistake - Hafley’s resume speaks for itself.
The Dolphins have cast a wide net in their search, interviewing or requesting interviews with a mix of offensive and defensive minds. Here’s a look at the full list of candidates:
- Klint Kubiak, Seahawks OC (Interviewed)
- Kevin Stefanski, former Browns HC (Interviewed)
- Jeff Hafley, Packers DC (Interviewed)
- Robert Saleh, 49ers DC (Interviewed)
- Chris Shula, Rams DC (Requested)
- Jesse Minter, Chargers DC (Interviewed)
- Kelvin Sheppard, Lions DC (Requested)
- Patrick Graham, Raiders DC (Requested)
- Anthony Campanile, Jaguars DC (Requested)
It’s a mix of proven head coaches and up-and-coming coordinators, but Hafley has clearly made an impression - not just in Miami, but across the league. He’s also reportedly drawn interest from the Raiders, Steelers, and Falcons for their head coaching vacancies.
At 46, Hafley brings a blend of NFL and college experience that’s increasingly valuable in today’s game. He started his coaching journey back in 2011 at WPI, then climbed the ladder with stops at Albany, Pitt, and Rutgers before breaking into the NFL as an assistant defensive backs coach with the Buccaneers.
From there, he had stints with the Browns and 49ers, then made the jump to the college ranks in 2019 as co-defensive coordinator at Ohio State - a role that helped elevate his profile nationally. Boston College hired him as their head coach in 2020, and while his 22-26 record there doesn’t jump off the page, the job he did developing talent and building a culture earned him respect in coaching circles.
Green Bay brought him back to the NFL ahead of the 2024 season, and Hafley didn’t disappoint. His Packers defense finished the year ranked 12th in total yards allowed, 11th in points allowed, 18th against the run, and 11th against the pass. Solid across the board - and more importantly, trending upward.
Hafley’s defensive philosophy is built around discipline, communication, and versatility - all traits the Dolphins could use as they look to reset and push back into playoff contention. With a talented but sometimes inconsistent roster, Miami needs a coach who can bring structure while also connecting with players. Hafley, by all accounts, checks both boxes.
Now, with a second interview lined up and a strong backing from inside the building, Hafley’s candidacy is gaining serious momentum. The Dolphins aren’t tipping their hand just yet, but if they’re looking for a coach who can lead with both a sharp football mind and a steady presence, Hafley might be their guy.
