Brandon Cisse is wasting no time making noise in Packers camp.
Green Bay has spent seasons trying to lock down the cornerback spot after the departure of Jaire Alexander a few seasons ago, and that uncertainty has only raised the pressure on the second-round pick to be ready now. Early in training camp, though, Cisse has looked the part and then some.
With Carrington Valentine sidelined by injury and out of practice, Cisse has been getting first-team reps and pushing to win a starting job before Week 1. The early signs have been encouraging, especially in one-on-one work, where he stayed glued to second-year receiver Savion Williams in coverage.
There have also been practices where Cisse and Benjamin St-Juste have lined up with the first unit while Keisean Nixon has worked with the second team. That could be tied to Nixon’s heavier early camp workload, but it also points to a strong start for both Cisse and St-Juste.
Matt LaFleur has already seen enough to be impressed.
“I just love what he’s all about,” LaFleur told reporters last week. “He is an A-plus human, and he loves football.
Every time he goes out there, there’s a lot of good things, and then there’s a lot of teachable moments. But I think he’s a guy that the sky’s the limit for him.”
Before camp even opened, there was plenty to like about Cisse’s outlook. He’s only 21, carries ideal cornerback size at 6-foot-0 and 189 pounds, and still has plenty of runway to grow into a top-level NFL defender.
His college tape only added to the excitement. Last season, he allowed catches on just 47.4 percent of targets and gave up only one touchdown in coverage, the kind of numbers that hint at a real shutdown presence.
Put it all together, and it’s easy to see why the buzz has taken off in Green Bay. The Packers used their first draft pick on Cisse in a defense that needs a long-term CB1, and with questions still hanging over incumbents like Nixon and Valentine, fans are already loading a lot of hope onto a 21-year-old cornerback.
