Barryn Sorrell Suddenly Has A Real Shot At Bigger Packers Snaps

Barryn Sorrell gains unexpected recognition from Micah Parsons, highlighting his potential to shine for the Packers amid injuries in the lineup.

The Green Bay Packers are heading into the first month of the regular season with a need for somebody to grab hold of a bigger role, and Barryn Sorrell is starting to look like a real answer. With Micah Parsons still working back from a major injury, the Packers will have to spread the load around, and Sorrell has quietly become one of the names to watch.

Parsons made that clear when he spoke to the press and singled out the former fourth-round pick for the way he has carried himself around the team.

"Even when I was in the rehab phase, and he was out there with Collin (Oliver) and Stack (Nazir Stackhouse) and all those guys at the house, he was still leading," Parsons told the press. "I told DC (DeMarcus Covington), I said you should count on Barryn being a leader, because he was holding guys to the standard that I would or I would expect him to do."

Green Bay drafted Sorrell out of Texas with the No. 124 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, and his first season was mostly about limited chances. He played in 14 games as a rookie and logged 206 snaps, with most of that work coming in the regular-season finale. He finished with 15 tackles, one tackle for loss, and 1.5 sacks.

That role was always going to be crowded. Parsons, Lukas Van Ness, and Rashan Gary were in the mix, which left Sorrell fighting for scraps.

Now the picture has changed. Gary is gone, Parsons is injured, and suddenly there’s real room for someone to take on more.

The Packers are also expected to give rookie Dani Dennis-Sutton plenty of chances to win a job, though the team’s usual approach with rookies could leave Sorrell ahead of him for now. Parsons is still the strongest candidate to resume things once he’s fully healthy, with Van Ness the likeliest starter in the meantime.

That leaves Sorrell competing with Collin Olliver, Brenton Cox, Arron Mosby, and Nyjalik Kelly for a roster spot and a larger role. Even with that crowded field, Parsons’ praise stands out. Sorrell is not just getting noticed for his play; he’s making an impression as a voice in the room, too.

He also worked out with Parsons before training camp, and the early signs around him have been positive. He’s said to look leaner, more explosive, and more aggressive. Whether that turns into more snaps is still to be determined, but he’s clearly moving in the right direction.

Packers Suddenly Have A Veteran Tight End Option At The Right Time

The Packers tight end room has thinned at exactly the wrong time, leaving the offense with a real need for help as the season moves along. Green Bay has been piecing together answers at the position, and that has put a premium on any experienced option who can step in quickly and stabilize the group.

Zach Ertz suddenly fits that profile. The veteran tight end is coming off ACL rehab, has been cleared for football activities and is interested in another season, which makes him a natural name to watch for a Packers team looking for depth and reliability. If Green Bay decides to add him, Ertz would bring a proven presence to a spot that has needed it. [Read more 🡒]

Packers Add Receiver As Injuries Suddenly Test Their Depth

The Packers had to make a quick roster move as receiver injuries started to chip away at their depth, adding Kisean Johnson to a 91-man roster after Matthew Golden and Jayden Reed were hurt. To make room, Green Bay waived cornerback Marlon Jones with an injured designation, a sign the staff is already juggling bodies as camp and preseason availability become more fragile.

Johnson is no stranger to the organization, having spent time on the Packers practice squad before returning for another look. He also brings college experience from Alabama State and Western Kentucky, giving Green Bay a familiar option at a position where even a few missing players can change the evaluation picture in a hurry. Packers Camp Injuries Are Suddenly Hitting Two Key Position Battles

Green Bays preseason work kept rolling Sunday inside the teams indoor facility, with practice closed to the public but open to the media a couple days after Family Night. The session brought a welcome development on the health front, as running back Chris Brooks and defensive lineman Javon Hargrave both came off the physically unable to perform list and got back on the field, a useful step for two players whose availability matters in crowded summer competitions.

The receiver room, though, is starting to feel the strain of camp injuries. The Packers responded by bringing back Kisean Johnson while waiving cornerback Marlon Jones with an injury designation, a roster shuffle that underscores how quickly one position can get stretched thin when bodies start to go down. Several other players are still either on the PUP list or sitting out practice, so the next few days will matter for anyone trying to carve out a role before the reps tighten. [Read more 🡒]
