Gonzaga Still Waiting On A Key Sophomore As Arkansas Test Arrives

Gonzaga looks to adjust their strategy without standout sophomore Davis Fogle in Saturday's exhibition game against Arkansas.

Gonzaga’s first exhibition game of the season will arrive without one of the program’s biggest offseason draw cards.

Davis Fogle, the sophomore wing expected to take on a major role this year, will sit out Saturday’s matchup with Arkansas in Fayetteville because of a left leg injury. The injury is not considered serious, and Fogle reportedly wanted to play, but Gonzaga decided to be cautious and keep him on the sideline.

That leaves Fogle and Chauncey Wiggins as the only Bulldogs not dressed for the 1:00 PM PT tipoff. Wiggins remains ineligible while pursuing eligibility through a lawsuit in Georgia.

Fogle’s absence is notable because he’s coming off a breakout freshman campaign that turned him from a mostly off-the-bench scorer into a real rotation piece by season’s end. The 6'7 wing averaged 8.6 points in 16.7 minutes over 30 games last season, then bumped that to 10.9 points in 23.9 minutes across the final 16.

Now, with Tyon Grant-Foster, Jalen Warley, Emmanuel Innocenti, Adam Miller, and Steele Venters all gone, the runway is wide open for a much bigger sophomore season. Gonzaga has every reason to think Fogle can be one of the team’s defining players this year.

He already flashed that ceiling earlier this month at Kraziness in the Kennel, when he dropped a program-record 30 points, going 11-15 from the field and 6-7 from three.

Even without him, there will be plenty to watch. Gonzaga also has Braden Huff back after he missed the second half of last season, and the Bulldogs added Massamba Diop from Arizona State, Isiah Harwell from Houston, and Xaivian Lee from Florida.

Saturday’s game won’t give Gonzaga a full look at its projected rotation, but it should open the door for other pieces to step forward against a strong Arkansas backcourt. With Wiggins unavailable, Gonzaga is expected to lean heavily on Harwell and its two backup point guards, Dayton transfer Javon Bennett and 23-year-old French guard Nathan de Sousa.

The Bulldogs also like using two point guard lineups, so Fogle’s absence gives coach Few a chance to see how Lee and Bennett function together, with de Sousa in the mix as well.

It should also mean extra opportunities for freshmen Luca Foster and Juwan Ekanga against an Arkansas group that includes Billy Richmond III, Jordan Smith Jr., and Jeremiah Wilkinson.

The exhibition is set for 1:00 PM PT on Saturday and will air on SECN+.

Gonzagas preseason reset is about to get a serious test, and it comes against a familiar kind of measuring stick in Arkansas. The two programs are set to meet in an exhibition game as they prepare for the 2026-27 season, giving both staffs an early look at rosters that have been largely rebuilt and a chance to see how new pieces fit when the pace picks up for real.

For Gonzaga, the matchup is less about the final score than about how quickly a new group can settle in against a talented opponent with its own questions to answer. Arkansas brings a roster built around a fresh core, and the game should reveal plenty about how the Bulldogs newcomers respond to size, athleticism and pressure on the other side of the floor before the long preseason evaluation really begins. Arkansas Gets An Early Gonzaga Test Fans Needed To See

Arkansas preseason showcase against Gonzaga already had the feel of an early measuring stick, but the lead-up has only sharpened the intrigue. With notable transfers and returning players on both sides, the exhibition gives fans a first real look at how the Razorbacks and Bulldogs are coming together, and it arrives with John Calipari still putting his own stamp on Arkansas new-look group.

Calipari has spent the stretch before the game emphasizing defensive intensity and competitiveness, part of a broader offensive adjustment he has been making as the roster takes shape. One more layer has been the status of freshman Miikka Muurinen, who was recently cleared to play after eligibility concerns lingered earlier in the offseason, giving Arkansas another piece to work with as it prepares for a matchup that should reveal plenty about both teams. Former Gonzaga Wing Tyon Grant-Foster Just Landed A New NBA Path

Tyon Grant-Fosters next step in pro basketball has a familiar development feel to it, and it keeps the former Gonzaga wing in the conversation after a winding college career that ended in Spokane.
