In the heart of Portland, the NCAA Tournament spotlight has shifted. Gonzaga's preparation won't be focused on BYU's standout freshman AJ Dybantsa, who exited with a stellar 35-point effort in a loss to Texas. Instead, all eyes are on Texas junior Dylan Swain, a dynamic 6-foot-8 wing making waves on NBA Draft boards.
Swain might not have Dybantsa’s sky-high potential, but his impact on Texas is undeniable. With an at-large tournament berth, the Longhorns have leaned heavily on Swain's consistent performances to secure wins against North Carolina State and BYU, setting up a crucial matchup against Gonzaga.
Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, Swain leads Texas in points (17.6), rebounds (7.5), assists (3.5), and steals (1.7). His contributions go beyond the stat sheet in the inaugural year under coach Sean Miller.
“He’s meant a lot to us,” said senior guard Chendall Weaver. “Since the summer, he’s been a vocal leader, guiding us with his understanding of Coach Miller’s system.”
Swain, one of two players who followed Miller from Xavier to Texas, embraced his leadership role early. “Coach Miller was clear about his expectations from the start,” Swain shared. “I knew stepping into this role would be impactful, helping guide the team from a player’s perspective.”
Swain's numbers are impressive. He’s scored in double figures in 31 of 34 games, notching his eighth double-double in a recent SEC Tournament game against Ole Miss. His season highs include 34 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists, and five steals.
“Dylan’s had an amazing season,” noted Texas center Matas Vokietaitis. “He’s versatile-driving, shooting, passing, rebounding. He’s been crucial for us.”
Gonzaga faces a strategic decision on handling Swain. Senior wing Jalen Warley is expected to take on the primary defensive role. Warley, fresh off a strong performance against Kennesaw State, feels nearly back to full health after a quad injury.
“They’re a well-rounded team,” Swain said of Gonzaga. “They play together, focus on defense, and capitalize on turnovers and missed shots.”
Gonzaga freshman Davis Fogle, who might also guard Swain, offered insight into the matchup. “He’s a superb player, great at driving and drawing fouls, and he can hit open shots too.”
As the game approaches, all eyes will be on how Gonzaga manages Swain’s multifaceted threat. The stage is set for an exciting clash, with Swain poised to continue his influential role for the Longhorns.
