ESPN Urges Seahawks To Turn To Jalen Milroe

Seattle Seahawks face a pivotal quarterback decision as Sam Darnold's potential return and Drew Lock's strong performance both bring strategic opportunities.

The Seahawks’ quarterback picture is starting to come into focus, and the early read is that Seattle is comfortable letting Drew Lock hold the fort while Sam Darnold works his way back.

A Tuesday report said Darnold could be ready for Seattle’s Week 3 game at the Washington Commanders on Sept. 27, even though he’s dealing with a “very unique soft-tissue injury.” On Wednesday, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano added more detail, and the biggest takeaway was that Seattle’s handling of Darnold has been encouraging.

“It’s clear Sam Darnold will miss this week and possibly Week 3,” Fowler explained. “But the Seahawks have refrained from putting him on short-term injured reserve, which is a good sign. The team seems confident that Drew Lock is plug-and-play until Darnold returns.”

That confidence makes sense after what Lock did against New England. In Seattle’s 13-10 win over the Patriots on Sept. 9, he completed 16 of 22 passes for 187 yards, threw one touchdown, and avoided turnovers. He’s also on track to start Sunday’s Week 2 trip to the 1-0 Arizona Cardinals, with DraftKings Sportsbook listing the Seahawks as 3.5-point road favorites as of Wednesday morning.

If Lock keeps the offense steady in Arizona, he could be in line to start again against Washington, which would give Darnold more time to recover for the Week 4 home game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Oct. 4.

Graziano also raised the possibility that Seattle’s offense could feature more than one quarterback in Arizona.

“Yeah, Seattle believes Lock can handle it, so he’s the guy there for the foreseeable future,” Graziano added. “I’m personally interested to see whether they put in anything specific for (2025 third-round draft pick) Jalen Milroe in terms of plays or packages that take advantage of his running ability and maybe give their offense a little bit extra juice. Why not, if Milroe is going to be active anyway as the second quarterback?”

Milroe has not thrown a regular-season pass yet, but his athletic traits could make him a factor in red-zone and short-yardage situations.

Braden Huff Has A Prove-It Shot At Gonzaga Stardom

Braden Huff is heading into the season with a bigger offensive burden than he has had before, and that fits the moment Gonzaga needs from him. The senior power forward is back after recovering from injury, and after flashing strong scoring efficiency and a steady stream of double-figure outings last season, he looks positioned to be one of the main engines of the Bulldogs attack.

There is still a little unfinished business attached to that rise. Huff was left off Blue Ribbon Yearbooks preseason All-American teams, a reminder that reputation has not quite caught up to production, and Gonzagas mix of roster additions and returning pieces should give him the support to keep pushing his game forward. If he delivers the kind of season his profile suggests, the conversation around him could look very different by 2027. [Read more 🡒]
