Drew Timme is getting another NBA look, and this one comes with a crowded Timberwolves frontcourt.
Minnesota has signed the former Gonzaga star to a training camp deal, according to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto. Timme now enters camp trying to carve out a spot on a roster that already has competition built in at the three-through-five spots.
The Timberwolves also brought in 6-6 KJ Martin and 6-7 Norchad Omier to battle for minutes in preseason. Martin, the son of Kenyon Martin, was the No. 52 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft and most recently played for the Chinese Basketball Association’s Ningbo Rockets. Omier, the first Nicaraguan player to ever play in the NBA, spent last season on a two-way contract with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Minnesota currently has 13 guaranteed standard contracts on the books for a 15-man roster, along with all three two-way spots already filled.
Timme, a 6-9 post player with a skill set that has always stood out, has spent much of the last three years bouncing around the pro ranks since leaving college basketball in 2023. In his NBA stints with the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Lakers organizations over the past two seasons, he averaged 5.6 points on 49.4% shooting from the field, 33.3% from three and 60.0% at the line, plus 2.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 13.6 minutes across 36 appearances.
He was with Los Angeles on a two-way deal during the 2025-26 campaign, but the Lakers ultimately went with guard Nick Smith Jr. for their final 2026 NBA Playoff roster spot. Smith Jr. was later converted to a two-year standard contract to make him playoff-eligible.
If Timme makes Minnesota’s opening day roster, the 2026-27 season would begin with 13 Gonzaga alums in the NBA. If he doesn’t stick, the likely next stop would be the Timberwolves’ G League affiliate, the Iowa Wolves.
