CBB Power LOSES As 28.5-Point Favorites

Can Porter Moser recover from Oklahoma's shocking defeat to a former Division II school in their season opener?

Porter Moser’s Oklahoma tenure opened the 2026-27 season with a jolt nobody in Norman wanted to feel: a 68-64 loss to East Texas A&M on Monday night.

The Sooners came in as a 28.5-point favorite in what was supposed to be a routine “buy game,” the kind of early-season tune-up that usually buys a team a comfortable win and a little breathing room. Instead, Oklahoma walked off with a result that landed as one of the most humiliating of the Moser era.

East Texas A&M, which went 11-21 last season, controlled the night for long stretches. The Lions led for 78% of the game, built a margin as large as 16 points and never let Oklahoma get much separation. The Sooners’ biggest lead was only five points, and for most of the game they were chasing.

Moser had said this was the best roster he’s had in six seasons at Oklahoma, but that group immediately ran into a disaster. The Sooners shot just 25% from three-point range, hitting five of 20 attempts, while East Texas A&M knocked down 11 shots from deep.

Even with that kind of shooting gap, this was still the sort of loss Oklahoma had no business taking. A bad night for an SEC team is supposed to look a lot better than East Texas A&M at its best, and yet the Sooners still found a way to lose at home to a program that was still at the Division II level when Moser was hired in 2021.

That makes the opening-night setback even uglier. Moser spent the offseason talking up how difficult the SEC would be, but Oklahoma didn’t even make it far enough to worry about conference play before suffering a Quadrant 4 loss. The kind of disappointment that usually shows up later in the year arrived immediately.

For a program that has spent years waiting for Moser to turn things around, Monday night felt like a fresh low - and maybe the clearest sign yet that this season could go the same way as the others.

Gonzaga Just Made This Elite In-State Recruiting Battle Very Real

Jalen Davis has put Gonzaga squarely in the mix for one of the most closely watched recruiting battles in the region. The five-star combo guard from Bremerton, a top prospect in the 2027 class, has trimmed his list to four schools, and the Bulldogs are right there among the finalists for a player ranked No. 21 overall who already stands out for his size, shooting touch and athleticism.

For Gonzaga, the appeal is obvious: landing a local talent with that kind of ceiling would be a major win, especially with elite programs circling. There is no commitment date yet, which keeps the picture fluid for now, but Davis decision to include the Bulldogs gives this race a real Northwest angle and sets up a recruiting fight that could linger for a while. Izan Almansa Is Forcing A Tough Gonzaga Frontcourt Decision

Izan Almansa has wasted little time making Gonzagas frontcourt conversation more complicated. The 21-year-old Spanish big man turned heads in exhibition play and carried that momentum into his college debut against Purdue, where he scored 11 points and added four rebounds. Mark Few has already pointed to Almansas feel for the game and his willingness to attack offensively, the kind of early impression that can quickly change how a rotation looks in November.

Massamba Diop entered the season as Gonzagas starting center, but the balance up front is starting to feel less settled than expected. Diops foul trouble has already been an issue, and his offensive production has not matched the role he opened with, leaving Few with a real decision to make about how the minutes are divided. For a team trying to sort out its interior identity, Almansas emergence is making that choice harder by the game. [Read more 🡒]
