Vanessa Borovilos is making waves in the world of amateur golf, and her journey is nothing short of inspiring. The 19-year-old Texas A&M sophomore recently clinched her second collegiate victory at the Moon Golf Invitational, showcasing her formidable skills with three rounds under par at the Suntree Country Club in Melbourne, Florida. Her performance was so dominant that she finished 7 under for the tournament, a full four strokes ahead of her competitors, helping the Aggies secure a second-place team finish.
As she prepares for her debut at the prestigious Augusta National Women’s Amateur (ANWA) this spring, Borovilos is riding a wave of momentum. The tournament, set for April 1-4, will feature 72 of the world’s elite amateur players, and Borovilos is ready to make her mark. Her history with Augusta goes back to her childhood, when she participated four times in the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals, even winning the Girls 10-11 category in 2018.
Since joining Texas A&M, Borovilos has climbed the ranks impressively, moving from 111th to 34th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. Her coach, Gerrod Chadwell, has noticed significant development in her game and demeanor, highlighting her dedication and independent approach to competition. This season, she’s managed to reduce her scoring average by a full stroke, a testament to her hard work and evolving strategy.
Borovilos is known for her strong ball-striking ability, driving the ball 250 yards off the tee. However, it’s her short game that’s truly shining.
A TaylorMade tour rep recently ranked her putting stroke among the top 10 he’s ever seen. This improvement can be attributed to her relentless practice and the influence of her teammates, like Jacob Sosa, who have helped her refine her wedge play.
Her decision to attend Texas A&M was driven by the need to escape the snowy conditions of her native Ontario, and the facilities and coaching staff at College Station have been pivotal in her development. Plus, the campus cuisine didn’t hurt in swaying her choice-mac ‘n’ cheese, steak, and ribs were a compelling welcome.
Growing up, Borovilos was a multisport athlete, dabbling in soccer, track, and rock climbing. This diverse athletic background has likely contributed to her competitive edge and adaptability on the golf course. Her favorite professional golfer, Jon Rahm, serves as an inspiration, particularly his resilience at the Masters.
As Borovilos heads back to Augusta, she’s not just looking forward to competing; she’s eager to embrace the experience and maybe even find another bowl of M&Ms. Her journey is just beginning, and with her talent and determination, she’s poised to make a significant impact in the golfing world.
