Royal Portrush Set to Host Prestigious Championship with Exciting New Twist

Royal Portrush and Royal Cinque Ports set to host prestigious amateur championships, highlighting key opportunities for emerging golf talent.

The storied Royal Portrush is set to host the 132nd Amateur Championship from June 14-19, a venue that recently showcased The 153rd Open. This iconic Northern Ireland course will see stroke play qualifying on both the Dunluce and Valley links, with the match play stages taking place on the Dunluce. A pre-qualifier is scheduled for June 11 on the Valley course.

Royal Portrush has a rich history with The Amateur Championship, having hosted it three times, most recently in 2014 when Scotland’s Bradley Neil claimed victory.

Meanwhile, the 124th Women’s Amateur Championship is returning to Royal Cinque Ports next year for the third time. Situated on England’s southeast coast, this renowned links course is a Final Qualifying venue for The Open and will welcome the world’s top women amateurs for the first time since 1988. This event will also commemorate the 125th anniversary of its inaugural staging at the venue in 1902.

The R&A Girls’ and Boys’ Amateur championships are set for Burnham & Berrow and Prince’s, respectively, from August 9-14. Additionally, the R&A Women’s and Men’s Senior Amateur championships will run concurrently at Blairgowrie from July 6-9.

Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, Chief Championships Officer at The R&A, highlighted the significance of these events, stating, “Our amateur championships and international matches are pivotal in the world of amateur golf. They offer pathways for elite golfers and life-changing opportunities, including exemptions to The Open and the AIG Women’s Open. We aim to attract top amateur players globally in 2027 and are excited to host our championships at some of the sport’s most prestigious venues.”

In 2027, international matches between Great Britain & Ireland and the Continent of Europe will feature the Jacques Léglise Trophy and the Junior Vagliano Trophy at Golf de Morfontaine in France from August 20-21. The dates and venues for the St Andrews Trophy and the Vagliano Trophy in 2027 are yet to be confirmed, as are the dates for The Women’s Amateur Championship.

For this year’s championships in Great Britain and Ireland, entries will open at the end of this week. More details can be found at www.randa.org.
