The first round is down at the Class 4A Iowa high school boys state golf championships, and Dallas Center-Grimes has grabbed the early edge in the team race while Cal Martineau of Dubuque Wahlert Catholic sits alone at the top of the individual board.
Dallas Center-Grimes posted a 294 at Davenport Country Club in Pleasant Valley to open a four-shot cushion over Cedar Rapids Prairie. Dubuque Wahlert Catholic followed at 300, with North Scott right behind at 301 and Waukee Northwest at 303.
The Mustangs also made their move on the par-5s, finishing 7-under there and leading the field in made birdies.
Behind those top five, Pleasant Valley sits sixth, Waukee is seventh, Johnston is eighth, Norwalk is ninth and Southeast Polk rounds out the top 10.
Martineau was the only golfer in red figures after the opening round, signing for a 1-under 70. The senior put together four birdies on the front nine, going back-to-back on holes No. 1 and No. 2 before doing it again on No. 6 and No.
- He also added 11 pars and played through three bogeys.
Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Henry Sobaski and Dallas Center-Grimes’ Avery Van Zelderen are both one shot back after matching 71s. Sobaski’s card featured four birdies, 10 pars and four bogeys, while Van Zelderen turned in the same score.
A logjam followed at 1-over, where Sam Federly of Waukee, Henry Baker of Johnston, Andrew Vollbeer of North Scott and Dallas Center-Grimes’ Chase Perrin are all tied for fourth.
Two names familiar from last year’s finish are also in the mix. Waukee’s Jonathan Ward and North Scott’s Jaxon Adkisson, who tied for second at state golf a year ago, are currently tied for ninth after opening with 3-over rounds.
Play continues Tuesday from Davenport Country Club.
Class 3A, Class 2A and Class 1A boys golf is played in the spring, when those state tournaments are held along with all four classifications of Iowa high school girls golf.
