Warriors Trade Idea Puts Steph's Window Against Their Young Core

Will a bold trade move help the Warriors bolster their lineup for another championship run alongside Steph Curry?

The Warriors’ summer has already taken enough twists to fill a highlight reel, and now there’s another roster idea floating around that would put Steph Curry next to a fresh veteran duo.

Golden State opened free agency with talk of chasing LeBron James and Anthony Davis, but that idea faded fast. Instead, the Warriors went back to familiar territory and brought in names the fan base already knows.

As NBA writer Jake Weinbach put it, “The Warriors are officially running it back despite missing the playoffs last season. Golden State re-signed Draymond Green, Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, De'Anthony Melton, and Gary Payton II this summer,”

Even with the uneven offseason, the franchise still got its biggest win done when Curry signed his extension before training camp. ESPN’s Anthony Slater reported, “Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has agreed to a two-year, $116 million contract extension, tying the franchise legend to the only organization he has ever known through his 20th NBA season, league sources told ESPN's Shams Charania on Friday. The deal includes a player option in the final season (2028-29), according to sources,"

That extension keeps Curry in place, and the next question is how Golden State can give him a roster capable of making another real run. Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley floated one answer: a trade that would send Kristaps Porzingis, Brandin Podziemski, Moses Moody, and draft capital to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Norman Powell and Jalen Smith.

Buckley’s proposal was: “Golden State Warriors receive: Norman Powell (trade-eligible on Dec. 15) and Jalen Smith. Chicago Bulls receive: Kristaps Porziņģis, Moses Moody, Brandin Podziemski and a 2028 1st-round pick (top-4 protected),”

On paper, the fit is straightforward. Powell and Smith would give Golden State two dependable pieces who could step in and help right away, while Powell adds another efficient shooting threat to an offense already built around Curry’s gravity. The two players are on contracts that combine for $71 million.

For a team trying to squeeze one more championship push out of Curry’s timeline, that kind of move would be aimed squarely at the present.

Warriors Just Sent A Big Opening Night Lineup Message

Steve Kerr is already hinting at how the Warriors might look when the games start to count, and Tuesdays second preseason game offered another clue. Veteran center Al Horford is set to come off the bench, with Gui Santos sliding into the starting lineup as Golden State leans into a smaller look while it sorts out roles and minutes.

Horfords reserve status appears tied to workload management, but the bigger question still hanging over the roster is Kristaps Porzingis. He remains out indefinitely, and his uncertain timeline leaves real doubt about whether he can be available for the season opener against the Lakers, which could push Golden State toward a small-ball answer right out of the gate. Stephen Curry Shares Why Don Nelson Still Means So Much To Warriors

The Warriors opened their preseason schedule against the Lakers at Chase Center with more than just a new look on the court. Golden State also unveiled a jersey patch honoring the late Don Nelson, the former coach who died in August, turning the night into a small but meaningful tribute to one of the most influential figures in franchise history.

Before tipoff, Stephen Curry reflected on what Nelson meant to the organization and the league, a reminder that the Warriors present-day success still carries echoes of earlier eras. Nelsons fingerprints were felt long before Curry became a superstar, but his connection to the current core gives the tribute extra weight, especially on a night when the team was back on the floor to begin another season. Warriors Face A Telling Brandin Podziemski Decision Amid Bigger Questions

The Warriors have more than one roster matter hanging in the balance, but Brandin Podziemski has become a telling one. Marc Stein reported that Golden State is working toward a contract agreement with the young guard, a move that would keep a promising piece in place as the franchise keeps trying to sort out a roster that still feels uneven around its core.

It is a familiar kind of Warriors crossroads: protect the future while managing the present. With concerns already lingering around the health of Draymond Green, Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Kristaps Porzingis, the urgency goes beyond one negotiation, even if Podziemski's situation may resolve soon. How Golden State handles that conversation will say plenty about where the front office thinks this team is headed. [Read more 🡒]
