The Golden State Warriors have certainly faced their fair share of challenges this season, but there are bright spots that fans can rally around. One of the standout stories has been the resurgence of De'Anthony Melton.
After missing an entire season due to a torn ACL, Melton's return has been nothing short of inspiring. Through 38 games, he's averaging 13.1 points, three rebounds, and 2.4 assists, providing a much-needed boost to the Warriors' lineup.
However, Melton's impressive performance comes with a catch. With Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler sidelined, Melton has stepped up significantly, averaging 15.4 points per game since February 3, including five games where he scored 20 or more points. This surge in productivity raises a potential issue for the Warriors: Melton has a player option this offseason and could attract lucrative offers from other teams.
If a bidding war erupts, Golden State might find it challenging to retain him. Thankfully, Moses Moody's development offers a promising alternative.
Moody has shown he's ready to fill a Melton-like role next season. Before a wrist sprain sidelined him, Moody was matching Melton's offensive output, averaging 15.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.3 assists between February 3 and March 2.
His defensive prowess and a 39.3% shooting rate from beyond the arc make him a valuable asset.
Ideally, the Warriors would keep both Moody and Melton, even if they might not start together if Draymond Green remains on the roster. One could easily serve as a dynamic option off the bench, adding depth to the team's rotation.
Yet, the Warriors also have Kristaps Porzingis's contract situation to consider. With only nine players under contract for the 2026-27 season and $28 million away from the first salary cap apron, Porzingis's extension is a priority if they wish to retain him.
If re-signing Melton proves too costly, Moody's contract, valued at a reasonable $12.5 million annually for the next two seasons, provides a solid fallback. His emergence ensures that the Warriors have options as they navigate these roster decisions.
