Warriors Owner Evaluates Steve Kerr's Role Amid Contract Expiry Rumors

Joe Lacob weighs in on Steve Kerr's future with the Warriors amidst contract speculation, emphasizing the importance of staying focused on the present season.

As the 2025-26 NBA season unfolds, all eyes are on Steve Kerr and his future with the Golden State Warriors. With his contract set to expire at the end of this season, questions loom over whether Kerr will continue his remarkable journey with the team.

Kerr is in the final stretch of a two-year, $35 million extension signed in February 2024. Warriors' principal owner, Joe Lacob, believes that now isn't the time for contract talks.

“Steve has made it clear that we’ll address this after the season,” Lacob told Tim Kawakami of the San Francisco Standard. “He’s got a job to do, and we’re focused on the present.

It’s really up to him and how he feels.”

At the start of training camp, Kerr echoed this sentiment, expressing no rush to settle his contract situation. “I’m comfortable going into the season with a year left,” Kerr stated. He emphasized his strong alignment with GM Mike Dunleavy and owner Joe Lacob, suggesting that any contract discussions can wait until the end of the season.

Kerr, a four-time champion coach, has shown interest in staying with the Warriors beyond the current season. “I love my job and what I’m doing every day,” he said, expressing hope for continued success with the team. “Hopefully, we can keep this group together and see where it takes us.”

Lacob, when asked about Kerr’s performance this season, chose to reflect on the coach’s entire 12-year tenure with the Warriors. “I evaluate him based on his long-term success,” Lacob explained.

“Steve’s been phenomenal, leading us to four championships and six Finals appearances. He’s a great coach and an even better human being.”

Currently, the Warriors sit eighth in the Western Conference with a 29-27 record. As the season progresses, the future of the winningest coach in Warriors history remains a topic of intrigue. Whether Kerr continues with Golden State or not, his legacy with the franchise is already firmly cemented.
